after using your new start CELX script for several days, I now think it's way too slow. The spiral motion to Earth should be much faster. I still prefer the original script in 1.4.1. Feels more professional.
It's easy to change the script to move faster, though I prefer the more stately motion. Anyhow, although I think my script gives a much more polished looking start, I didn't intend to present my script as a replacement for the current start.cel. It was just a demonstration of how to set the position of the camera instantaneously (that is, without a goto) to avoid the bright white flash (in fixed versions of Celestia--I still need to check in the fix for Mac.)

Again, whatever marvelous script become boring for an everyday use.
What could be really nice is a short demo introducing Celestia the first time it is launched and only a quick and clean positioning of the observer for example at 0,2 ua targeting the Sun for subsequent launches...
Could be:
- Introduction script (quick tour of a few objetcs) - played only once
- Demo script (longer tour with DSOs, guides etc) - played from script menu
- Start script (Sun targeted) - played every launch
The introduction script could print "Welcome to Celestia", replacing the old logo... In the absolute it should not pass 15/20 second.
What would be really really nice is a fading end on a complete black screen, then a "flash" on the sun as it appear at the end of the hypothetical Start script; this way one would have in mind this introduction script at every launch because of the very same screen...

Apparently you repaired the version you get when you download
the 1.5.0 Pre4 version already. Since I've had to reinstall Celestia
again, I just noticed that the previous bugs concerning the start cel
no longer apply. My start cel now works as I expect it to - without
any pause or flash of white at the Sun.
Many thanks for the fix Christophe. Works like a charm.
Take care, Bob

That fix won't help you unless you use Linux. But I'm glad to hear that the flash is gone regardless.

Well in that case, I have no idea why it's working the way I thought
it should now.
Could be too that I finally got Vista installed correctly?
At any rate, my continuing thanks for this spectacular program to all
of you developer types. As always, much appreciated here.
Thanks, Bob

Okay, Here I go again...
My version of Celestia does NOT use the gstar texture in order to
render our Sun. In fact, it doesn't use ANY star texture that I can
locate on my machine. All of my previous posts involved a "White"
spot, but this is because anything in the center of the Sun is white.
If I watch it for a while, the sunspots (from WHATEVER texture it is
using) simply disappear when they rotate into the middle of the
Sun.
Does this happen to anyone else? Or, am I still just screwing up my
Celestia again? I've installed it about 5 times now, and I'm really
losing interest. That's Bad...
EDIT: I have completely REMOVED the star textures and all flare
textures, and I still see the same Sol. What gives?
Thanks, Brain-Dead

I'm seeing the same behavior with the sunspots disappearing in the middle of the sun. The fact that the stars do not use a texture was talked about extensively in the past.

selden wrote:The "white center" bug has been around for most of the 1.5.0 prereleases. Hopefully it'll be fixed before the final release. Celestia v1.5.0 uses the same surface texture image file for all stars: astar.jpg is colorized (but only slightly ) according to the star's spectral type.
Okay, thanks again Selden. I managed to figure out that the astar.jpg
file was being used by the process of elimination. (Or addition.) I just
kept adding one texture at a time until I saw the Sun again. This now
explains why I have had so much trouble with Sun add-ons, etc.
I thought it was just ME again.
Sorry, I was unaware of previous conversations, and I guess I just
missed them via search.
At any rate, thanks for the info. At least I'm not crazy. Well, at
least not any more than usual.
Take care, Bob

chris wrote:Well, I haven't looked at the situation with cel scripts, but it looks like it might be very easy to have a cleaner startup sequence with celx scripts. I changed this line in celx.cpp:Code: Select all
scriptAwakenTime(0.1),
I simply replaced 0.1 with 0.0. It works fine on Windows; if someone running Celestia on another OS would like to verify it there, I'll check in the fix.
Here's a nice start script to try out--a nice variation on the usual Earth zoom. You'll have to save it as start.celx, then InitScript in celestia.cfg to be start.celx instead of start.cel.

Hey Chris
I'm running linux, and your improved startup script works perfectly! I was searching for a way to change the startup script so as to avoid that bright yellow sun startup.
Thank you very much!
Re: Celestia Start-Up Location
The startup sequence isn't satisfying on the OS X version yet. I'm getting that huge yellowish flash (Sun's surface) in the face, each time I start Celestia. Annoying as hell !

Me too, in Windows and after having assigned the textures to stars section of the the config.dat. Without assign texture to the config.dat all works fine, though. Just a thought: during the load the camera does point to the deep space or to the Milky Way's border and then (when the Sun's textures is ready) it turn of 180 degree.
Never at rest.
