Q'onoS Fix?

I'm wondering if some one can tell me (or point me in the right direction) how to fix the blank Q'onoS planet ~ there's a little note by the download that says:

"Small error for Q'onos. Low res pack texture is set to recognize "q'onos.png" file when it's actually "q'onos.jpg". Change that datum in the SSC file to avoid a white q'onos planet."

That's Greek to me ~ I would sure appreciate a little more guidance.

Any help would be much appreciated.

first of all, welcome to the Celestia community.

Now on to the problem you have. (Should have posted it better under addons, but let that be aside.)

Basically that sentence means, that you have to navigate to the directory where you stored that addon.
Then you have to find a file with the extension .SSC. If you don't find any SSC file, check if your OS has switched on to show the extensions of files.
There can be probably more than one SSC in the folder. Just start opening them with a plain text editor and search for "q'onos.png"
Once you have found that, just change "png" to "jpg" and save the file. (You can also change "png" to "*" which IMHO is the better choice anyway.)

Next time you start Celestia up and go to Q'onos there should be a texture there. Take also a look at Seldens resources for Celestia, there is a lot like this explained.

Thank you so much for your response. I think I see what we're trying to do, but I'm not quite there yet ~

My computer isn't able to open the .SSC file; it says that it doesn't know what program to use to open it ~

But there is a file called "q'onos;" no suffix or prefix, just "q'onos." It won't let me rename it, but when I open it, it is the color detail map of the planet. When I click on Properties, it says it's a jpg file with the name "q'onos.jpg." So, it seems it's alread a jpg file . . . ? But on Celestia, Q'onos is still blank ~

1. You need to tell Windows to stop hiding filetypes from you.

In any Explorer window (one that shows file icons) select the Tools/ Folder Options ... menu
Select the Tab "View"
In the list of options find "Hide Extensions for known file types" and clear its checkmark.
Also check "Show hidden files and folders"
and clear "Hide protected operating system files". (You might find some other viewing options that you want to change.)
then click on OK.

2. Then you can set the files' associations. In other words, tell Windows to use Notepad to open these files. You need to do this for SSC, STC and DSC files.

Click on the file's icon with the right-mouse-button and select "open" in the popup menu.
In the next popup menu, select "Select the program from a list" and click OK.
Find and select Notepad in the next popup menu and make sure the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked. Then click OK.

Sometimes the contents of the files will look strange, containing little squares. They can be fixed by opening and then saving them with Wordpad. (Don't use Wordpad to edit them.)

You can use the right-mouse-button-popup-menu to do this. After you've set SSC, STC and DSC to be opened with Notepad, that popup menu will contain another entry "Open with...". Select that, find WordPad in the next popup menu and select it. Don't check the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

If I may ask, why not? I told it to always open with notepad and the SSC, STC, and DSC files work fine for me.

That's "don't check" when temporarily using WordPad.

WordPad has the potential problem of inserting binary formatting codes that would cause problems for Celestia, so you shouldn't use it all the time unless you really know what it'll do to the file.

Do check that box when specifying Notepad (or your favorite text editor) to be the default editor.

Under windows I generally use WordPad to edit ssc/stc files and it works fine. (Also has the advantage it seems to be able to handle Linux-style linebreaks, which Notepad can't).

If you use WordPad to create ssc/stc files then you should create a new file and specify text only rather than rich text or anything like that.

Need to find myself a decent text editor for Windows though.
