Remember, the Celestia forum performance depends on whether or not the Kazaa server is running on Chris' network. When it's running and slowing things down, loading all the forum software's icons takes "forever". When the Kazaa server isn't running, everything loads quickly.

every now and then, actually not very often at all, i cant get the forum to open, it just times out. sometimes it is caused by chris uploading a new version, but not always.

Mike,

There have been a few times lately when the network link to Shatters.net has been down completely. (I don't know if it's a problem with their router or the computer itself, since I haven't asked. I do hope Chris has been doing regular system backups.) When it's down, a traceroute stops at one of QWest's "TAmerica" routers.

If you're using the name (either www or ennui) this also can be explained by the 'kazaa' effect, since it blocks access to Shatters' local nameserver. (Their ISP's nameserver is supposed to act as a secondary, but it seems to have lots of problems, too.)

If your system can't get the translation from the name of the computer to its numeric address, it won't even try to make a connection. You can 'fix' this either by adding the name to address translation to your computer's local host table (LMHOSTS under Windows) or by always using the numeric address ( 63.224.48.65 )

See the Microsoft article http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/win98/reskit/part7/wrkappf.asp for a description of how to set up LMHOSTS.

I always use the numeric address from a link on my Celestia Web page.

I hope this helps (or calrifies things) a little.

well, yes it does actually, but im only saying this has happened like 3 or 4 times in the last year, so its not like a big problem. anyway, what is this numerical address?

a) just follow the link on the home page: all of the links are relative, so once you've started using the numeric address, your browser will keep on using it. Until you come across a link that actually has the name embedded in it.

b) tack /forum/ onto the end of the number

The recent downtime were due to power outages . . . Time to get a battery backup system :>
