Forums login bug?

Quite weird... for some reason I have to login twice before the forum acknowledges me as logged in.

Is it just me or.....?

If you're using Firefox, it has bugs in how it handles cookies.

I would suggest
1. delete all of the cookies related to shatters.net

2. Once you're logged in, don't logout. The browser will remember that you are still logged in the next time you visit the Web site. You shouldn't have to type your Shatters password for a very long time. So put it somewhere you can find it when you do eventually need to login again!

I'm using IE7. I've tried deleting cookies but it hasn't helped any... if anything, another weird action taking place is that the forum sections no longer denote when new posts are made (the little symbol to the left of the listings). *sigh* A minor inconvenience.

I will try the not logging out idea.

Same thing just happened to me, but here's the solution...

You DON'T DELETE the shatters.net cookies, you KEEP them. If your using
some sort of computer cleaner, chances are that it is removing your
cookies.

I use a wide variety of cleaners, but - in my case - I can choose NOT to
delete particular cookies based on my needs. Very helpful. BTW, I'm
using ccleaner for my everyday cleaning.

Maybe this helps... Maybe not...

For the FireFox users, there is an extension to which tell what cookies needs unerased:

You can tell to the mysql_data and mysql_sid's cookies of not to be erased by FireFox on exit but just by that extension.

Next time you log in just check the "remember me" box. It solved the problem for me.

Because you do not erase the cookies! If you try to clean your Internet content you'll unable to log again.

Why on earth would I want to erase my cookies? That would mess up the login for all of the sites I visit.

Reiko,

You only need to erase the (messed up) cookies which are associated with the site(s) giving you problems.

Also, as I'm sure you're aware, check the box "remember me" and never select the "log out" option. Then when you connect to the site, the Web forum software will use the cookies on your system to automatically log you in.

I use CCleaner also, and it's instructed to leave the shatters.net cookie alone. Ever since this problem (back in January), I just click on Profile and log in through there... problem solved.

Using a product (free at that) like CCleaner, you can leave the good cookies intact. Purging the cookies and temp files helps keep your system running fast, and also prevents activity tracking. :wink:

Me too. I use the FireFox browser, and once I've told to the above mentioned extension of not erasing whatever else cookie I do not want, I repeat the operation for the CCleaner. Thus, I can erase all the rest (cache in primis, very big after a navigation in this site) without problem when going out from the browser.

OK try this one, using FireFox, When I log into the forums for the first time, I see the unread post, I can go into the post at it will go to the last place that I stopped. Now when I back out, and click on another post that is also flagged as unread, it comes up with "there are no new posts for this topic"

I don?€™t have this issue with IE or any other phpbb board that I use. It only happens for this site.

I do not recognize this behaviour. Whether I push the back button or the refresh button when the posts are flagged as news, it does work again. Instead, if with "back out" you mean the logout for then do the login again, thence it happen exactly what you say; even in the case of closing the browser without login out; that is the flags turns white as "no post". I don't know about IE because I'm doing the possible for do not use it anymore (too much resources consumption. My system memory span from 250Mb average with FF to 380Mb with IE. Sorry, but I'm a RAM's maniac; it's not ever suffices enough).

It will go to the previous page where it shows the the other unread messages, but if i click on the option to go to the next unread message it says there are none. it like once i view the first post, it flags all of them as read regardless of if i read them or not.

Selden - and others with same problem...

Finally solved the forum login problem here.

First, I REMOVED all cookies from my system.
2nd, I re-visited Celestia Forum and logged in.
3rd, I setup my Firefox browser (BEFORE exiting it) to KEEP the cookies it
found for shatters.net.
4th, I made CERTAIN that all of my spyware and cleaner programs ignored
the cookies from shatters.net.

The last time I logged in (This time) I got logged on with NO troubles.

Just FYI...

Edit:
5th, Never log OUT of Celestia Forum... That way cookies stay good.

Sorry, but is this a bug? If I use my back/forward arrows on ANY
forum, the same thing happens to me. I'm not certain that this is a
bug though. Has something to do with page refresh I believe.

Keep in mind that I usually don't know what the hell I'm talking
about, but I have followed the steps I outlined in the first post in
this thread, and I have had NO troubles staying logged in using the
normal approach to visiting - and revisiting - this forum and the
Celestial Matters forum.

One further note: If I have just logged in and then hit the
back button, I will lose all flags for use in locating what I have
read or not read. I haven't noticed flag problems within the
normal usage of Firefox though.

All of this is - AGAIN - just FYI.

Actually I think this is a bug with the forums, and I know the reason why. When clicking on button to take you to the last message, I just noticed that the sid changes. This is what is causing the issues because soon as the sid changes it considers it a new user session and clears out the previous history.

Example:

The sid should be the same for viewing and posting.

Personally if we can, I would just wait for phpBB3 http://www.phpbb.com/ Its on RC7 and will hopefully go gold before the end of the year. Its just a better system, and if I remember reading the developer logs correctly the backend footprint is better.

I think i just found the source of the error.

Can some one check the domain name in the config section of the site.(Administration => General Admin=> Configuration) I get the feeling that the site was installed as www.shatters.net but the domain is was later changed to just shatters.net There is s a difference between these two, and would caused the sid issues.
