I still need to connect the dots between the MEX h344 DEM and the main model. I also need to finish the textures because the old ones of the vallesmarineris don't fit to the new coverage area. I did a quick version of Olympus mons (MDIM21).
So getting the model done will take a little while longer. I am going to start to take some more snapshots and upload them to my site. Later tonight or so?

ElChristou, these 3d mars pics have got me thinking: we all know that the perfect companion to your detailed Apollo 11 lander is of course, a highly detailed, 3d MOON... interested?
The Selene moon probe launched from Japan should be entering moon orbit pretty soon.. laser altimeter data of 5m resolution.. but we'll have to wait almost a year!

The problem is I only will be able to buy another video card, like a 8600 GT or even the supposed 8700 GTS in mid 2008 or even 2009.But by then, the models of cartrite will only work well in the new available 9600 GT(or even 10600/10800 GT/GTS) or so...do you understand my problem?
The models should be optimized to work well with more memory, more processor(CPU),not so dependanble of a GPU!

I uploaded a few clips of flybys. They can be found here.
They were originally captured with the KDE version at 1280x982 and 1024x768.
The versions I made available were re encoded from the theora video to Xvid4 in avi format with Avidemux.

Yes, that would be great, but the apollo 11 landing site is pretty dull, a few small craterx... that's all... so I suppose we will try to model it from shots, then later perhaps and update?

Like any popular action flick, the audience is expecting sequels.. Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16, 17

I seem to remember that a couple of the Apollo missions had hills or mountains in the background while they were driving around on the rover. That would be pretty cool to include those at the landing site.
Anyhow, I tried a different approach to modeling Mars. This screen shot is a new model that has a larger coverage area of the MEX h0344 data. The model uses all MEX data. Except for a transition zone around the model the rest of the planet is a low res model. The dem was reduced by 2. A snapshot from the above model. There are other snapshots here.
I'm going to try a larger area twice the size and reduce the dem by 4. That is, only every 4th pixel is used in the dem over a larger area.

... I think I will do a break from historical models after Apollo11 to do an SF addon over one of those scenery... stunning!
Well the problem is that if we do Apollo11, it will be strange to make it land @ Apollo15 landing site...

Cartrite, I'm following silently this thread, but now I cannot avoid to write here, so..... WOW!!! 8O
Waiting for the final release, that surely will shock all of us.
Thanks a lot for your work, very appreciated by me and my students.
Bye
Andrea

Maybe one of the sequels. It will be a long while before any height data for the moon will be available anyhow.

Thanks for all the comments above from everyone. Most of the credit should go to the science teams running the show on the MRO and MEX spaceships and those involved in releasing the data I've been using.
Right now as you may have figured out, I'm still experimenting to come up with a good approach. I'm leaning towards a very low res model of the planet with normalmap and a couple of close up regions with MEX models embedded. I'm also trying to see how much under sampling I can do on the dems before the quality of the dem is lost.
Thanks again.

Sure, and them are freely available, but YOU did the miracle to make them usable in Celestia.
Using your first release of Vallis Marineris, I bring my students to a low-level flight over it, and they appreciate this very much, so I'm just dreaming on how beautiful will be to do it with the final release, with all the Vallis rendered.
WOW once again!
Bye

UNBELIVEABLY that the 8600 GTS gives at least more 10 fps than the 7600 GT.In my system,it runs at the ridiculous frame rate of 12-15 fps and the 2 GB RAM didn??t help in anything. It appears that I increase my memory to NOTHING.It??s an ABSURD that I should change my video card.Do you realize that very few users have a computer powerful enough to run this cumbersome model?Only Andrea and a few more...
