I looked up stereoscopic viewing for the forum, I saw it hasn't been discussed since 2005.
So I was wondering if a function to split the view with red and blue glasses could be done so as to allow one free reign to wander and observe in depth. Without the clumsy snap shotted method of splitting the screen and moving over slightly, then crossing eyes till image is seen in 3D.
I can do the split screen bit, but getting the stereo depth right isn't as easy as it seems. It's easy to make the depth too much or too little. Especially when it comes to looking at a random group of stars that are fairly far away.
Is anyone considering this sort of feature at this point? Or has progress ceased? I've got the latest version and the creation date says 2003, makes me wonder if development is dead.

If the creation date is 2003 then you do not have the most recent version of Celestia. The most recent "stable" version of Celestia is v1.4.1, released in February, 2006. It's available at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=21302
The most recent beta-test version of Celestia for Windows is v1.5.0pre3, released in May. It is available at http://www.celestiaproject.net/~claurel/celest ... .0pre3.exe
Unfortunately, direct support for the creation of stereoscopic pairs is not currently in the development roadmap. That roadmap can be seen at http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11013&
However, one could write a CELX (Lua) script which would create appropriate pairs of images using Celestia's split-screen functions, although not red-blue (anaglyph) pairs.

A very enterprising hacker might be able to get Celestia working with Chromium or Equalizer (just heard about this one) to get tiled/CAVE/stereo rendering but I haven't heard of anyone succeeding yet. It may also require hacking the Celestia source yourself, and there's no guarantee it will work in the future. But don't let these words stop anyone..

don't know a direct way to create anaglyph pictures but you always can save two screens with slightly shifted R-L POVs and combine them into a 3-D anaglyph picture by using a program like

The strength of the effect depends on the distance so if you choose a big distance it looks like if you had a tiny little universe in a shoe box. Let's call it 'God's perspective' assuming that s/he had two eyes...
