Can't see it. Bottom of page is the Toliman System - description "Hi-res Eathlike world" so I guess that's not it...

lite version?

Post #23by ogg » 16.12.2002, 06:45

Looks fantastic. For those of us with crappy/restricted connections though, would you consider offering a 'lite version' download package of nebula models/textures/scripts minus the planets? Don't get me wrong, I like planets, it's just a big download and the IT guys where I work get really crabby about this stuff for some reason...

To those who "cannot find" the file:

You *really* need to read this thread. Stop getting distracted by the pretty pictures. Don't skim over the text.

On the very first page of this thread, in the next to the last posting on the first page, Ras' provided an explict link to the zip file. That same message even includes the text of an entry for your favorites.cel to help you get to the best viewing location if you're running the Windows version of Celestia.

And I carefully waited until I finished downloading it before posting this :)

Ras',

You're welcome. I've had similar problems when trying to tell people how to find things in documents that I've written. It's *obvious*! *We* know what we mean! ;)

I do have some questions about the planetary sytem design. (The artwork is amazing!)

Specifically, my questions are about the DDS cloud texture that you used for Katyra.

a) exactly what command(s) did you use to incorporate the transparency channel? I have yet to be able to persuade nvdxt to actually include an alpha channel in its output file.

b) How fast is it rendered on your system?

(Maybe this is something that Chris can answer)

When I enable cloud rendering, Katyra's DDS cloud texture causes my system to plummet from 40-50fps to an agonizingly slow 5fps. This is using a 128MB Ti4200. Yet when I replace it by the PNG cloud image that you used for Eden, the framerate only falls off to a reasonable 30fps. Is it a function of how detailed the DDS image is? Or its size? Or some kind of interaction with the bright specularity of the planet? But if it's this last, then why doesn't the PNG file exibit the same slow-down?

ok, i know the nebula is real, but are all of the planets just a nice addition?

Mike,

Well, the reflection nebula is OK, but Ras' took some artistic license with the absorption nebula in front of it (a "Bok globule" nurturing unborn stars inside) and turned it into a hole :)

And, yes, the stellar system around V380 is his creation, too. V380 is s variable, but not a multiple, as best I've been able to determine. There are lots of other young stars nearby, though.

p.s. (added later)
Studies of V380 do seem to indicate that it is likely to have a surrounding accretion disk, so a planetary system may very well be in the formative stages. See http://www.edpsciences.org/articles/astro/pdf/1999/07/ds7030.pdf

pps (added even later)
Well, I eat my words ;) Apparently V380 is a binary in the infrared. See http://www.astro.isas.ac.jp/asca/bibliography/phd_thesis/Hamaguchi_Kenji/hamaguchi.pdf
At this rate, there'll be a paper next year listing a dozen planets ;)

Great work Rassilon!

However there are some problems with your package on linux because of the inconsistent mixed case in filenames:
V380_neb.3DS -> V380_neb.3ds
V380_neb.png -> V380_NEB.PNG
starnames.dat \r\n -> \n

To all add-on developpers:
To be sure that your work is seamlessly useable on all platforms please! please! follow the coding standards defined in coding_standards.html and use only lowercase in your file names (and in their references in ssc and 3ds files as well!).

Icehunter,

it is 34MegaBytes :(

Ras',

You might want to think about providing just the nebula with the central star. Most of the size is due to all the textures used for the stars and planets in the system.

Rassilon...

NGC 1999 is looking great, but I'm getting noticeable banding on the nebula.

If I use V380_neb.jpg it looks better, having a smooth gradation (no transparency of course).

Any ideas on a way round this one?
