Anyone tried the new Google-Earth "sky" program ?
I would like to know what the resolution
of the Planets textures are,
but I can't seem to get close to the
solars planets. I must be doing something wrong,
or the servers are overloaded at this moment .

I heard about this on the way to work this morning. It is just been officially released so the activity maybe high for downloading. Will let you all know what I have found after I install the upgrade. It is a part of Google Earth.

OK I got it working. The planets cannot be zoomed in to very close. The various nebula and images that NASA has are very nice and can be zoom into a lot. The POV is alway from earth (from the last location you were on earth). You can only screen grab images however most have links back to the source on NASA or other servers maybe the images can be downloaded from there don't know. Here is a screen grab of the Horsehead nebula in the constellation Orion. I can zoom in quite close (like in google earth) to any of the features. If you double click it will center the location an zoom in closer. Have not figured out the time fuction.

There are several immediate problems and omissions that come to mind. One major problem is that items that you have active on Earth tend to be visible in the sky. It took me ten minutes to realize that the great long cluster of yellow dots in Orion was actually the past few days' worth of earthquakes in California!
Still, this is a preliminary version, and I am sure that the folks at Google are well aware of the problems and bugs ahead of them. I'm looking forward to future versions that will tighten this application up.
