New names for Jupiter's moons

The INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION recently issued the name of the latest Jupiter's Satellites :


XVII S/1999 J 1 Callirrhoe
XVIII S/1975 J 1 Themisto
= S/2000 J 1
XIX S/2000 J 8 Megaclite
XX S/2000 J 9 Taygete
XXI S/2000 J 10 Chaldene
XXII S/2000 J 5 Harpalyke
XXIII S/2000 J 2 Kalyke
XXIV S/2000 J 3 Iocaste
XXV S/2000 J 4 Erinome
XXVI S/2000 J 6 Isonoe
XXVII S/2000 J 7 Praxidike

Don't forget to update your ssc files!

I don't think the default celestia installation or the minor moons add-on has them. You can find their orbital parameters in my ssc files at http://www.skullcave.com/celestia/
(I'll update the files with the new names tonight if I have time)

you can download the ssc file for the new Jupiter's satellites there:

or from

In the ssc file replace "S2001 J10" by "Chaldene" etc...

a few of them have not been confirmed and therefore don't have a name yet (example S/2000 J11)

Thanks! I also noticed that your moon files cause conflicts with celestia because they includes moons that are already in the solarsys.ssc file.

Yeah I know, I put all the gas giant moons in their own ssc files so my solarsys.ssc file only contains the 9 planets + Luna, Phobos, Deimos & Charon.
Smaller files are easier to edit. :D

Thats actually a really good idea, maybe we should convince chris to make a seperate folder called "moons" :mrgreen:

Hey! Whoa!!! Hold on there. Make sure you are renaming the right moons! "S2000 J10" and "S2001 J10" are two different moons.

And "XVIII S/1975 J 1 Themisto" doesn't seem to have an entry.
