Thought: Solaris theme for the forum

Post #1by ElChristou » 11.07.2007, 17:39

Today I check the forum from a PC, and as a non registered user, I came over the Solaris theme...
This theme is really nice, but I'm wondering if it's a good choice because this theme really give a strong feeling of a SF fan forum than anything else.

Is this what we really want for a first contact? Is this not a bit misleading for the newbies about the content of the forum?

I like the starry background. Perhaps we could replace the over-ripe orange at the top with a nice Blue Marble shot of Earth?... or some nice new imagery of Jupiter or Saturn?

I agree with LordFerret. Perhaps the image would be changed month after month. Another thing, there is a manner of automatically refresh the index page without press the apposite browser's button?

I have said this before - several times: i absolutely *hate* the Solaris theme. It has much poorer readability than the default PHPBB silver theme, and, yes, the scifi-style is indeed misleading. Feels like a trekkie page.

It is so bad that soon i will have to set my usual work aside and complete the half-baked shatters theme i have lying around from last year.

It looks exactly like the Celestia homepage, only without the navigation column. I just haven??t had time to complete it. Will have to wait until after i have converted the CM to PHP, too i think. But i wish i had it today, just to get rid of Solaris...

I also can't stand the Solaris theme. Graphically and ergonomically it's an offence to all my senses ;-)

What is particularly annoying is that if I click on the email message announcing that I got a PM, then Solaris comes on as a default, rather than the right theme...

Personally, in my humble opinion, the main defect (as all the similar websites) is the white text on black background. After a long time tire.

Well, I"m not going to complain, even if I don't care too much for the Solaris style. I do switch the background, so unless I clean out cookies or log out, I'm fine and don't have to bother with it.

I appreciate this forum, and figure that whatever design the creator chooses, I can live with.

I appreciate the forum too, but changing the default theme is done with a simple click of a button on the admin account.

Could we have a poll on this?

I don't think we need a poll. But we need Chris to tell him! And Chris has been unresponsive since some time. Perhaps he is taking some sort of vacation.

Runar, is this really necessary? I mean if we agree that the Solaris theme is a bit misleading about the content of the forum (not a SF forum), I suppose it's a valid enough reason to make the Subsilver (or your coming theme) the default one... ...no?

I would prefer the subsilver theme, of course. The shatters.net theme will take some time, i am a year late with it as it is, but it is on my list. Until then, the subsilver... I for one don??t need a poll.

Same for me but, having a bad sight  , I would like it a bit more contrasty, I mean that lettering should be darker that it is actually, e.g. dark black over light blue.

8O... Andrea, for me the SubSilver theme is black letter on white background... How do you get something else?

Chris, we see the same black letter, but the background I see is absolutely NOT white, its a very light blue overall, with posts background a bit darker blue.
If this is not what you see, I fear I'm not using the SubSilver option, but knowing the "Solaris Theme" (that I hate, BTW), and thinking that there are only two options, I have some doubt on the matter.
Anyhow I was asking for a "Bold" black character, not the "Normal" as actually it is. 8O
Sorry not to have been clear.
