The movement through the zodiac should be possible. Once Andrea and I get back up to speed I will look at that...

Buggs, I'm sorry for misleading, but I intend the movement OF zodiac not through the zodiac; perhaps I'm confusing about the true meaning of the word "through"? 8O

If I am not mistaken, the Ptolemaic system relied on a fixed celestial sphere and the Sun and planets passed "through" the constellations in the zodiac. Of course, I could be totally mistaking what you are asking for...

I shall try to explain better what I intend. A fixed star (of zodiac or not) in the Ptolemaic system should have to move around the Earth in 24h; that is the whole heaven may be turn, if Earth would be at rest. The motion through the zodiac (season) it's another thing.

Better again: how the Ptolemaic system would have explained the rise and the set of the constellation in the arc of 24h if the Earth was fixed?

I will have to look into this more Fenerit, but I understand your meaning now. I will be on holiday until next week so you will have to be patient.

Well, just to show you the actual situation regarding the Ptolemaic System, here is one shot of the System (sorry for the dimension, but I think it needs to be seen clearly):

Image

Please note the stars: Buggs Moran has projected on a sphere, surrounding the Ptolemaic Solar System, all the 1022 stars of Ptolemy's Almagest, giving them the right dimension based on their luminosity.
I have enhanced with red lines the Orion constellation.
Do you like it?

Cham, I confirm you that the Moon has its epycicle, and that you was right regarding Mars, that now has its own, thank you.
Bye

Any possibility to have some map from the known world at this time mapped on Earth?

Good idea, if it's high resolution (well, at least 2k).

Or even a 3D model of that "half Earth" sitting on elephants ... :)

EDIT : Oops ! It gave me some idea !

Sure, here is one of the many we are preparing, each one according with the geographic knowledge of the Earth at that time.
This is for the Ptolemaic System:

Image

You can use it as is, it's a small 256x512 pix image.
But as you give me the occasion to blame (just a litthe, anyhow), here is what is our big problem for this project: thanks to Vincent information now the orbits are drawn even at big distances, but labels DON'T, and globes equally DON'T!
Give a look here:

Image

You can see the star sphere (Almagest) with all orbits correctly drawn, but farthest planets (Mars and Saturn) and their labels are missing.
What can we do to avoid disappearing of planets/moons and their labels when we are a bit far away?
Please, please, HELP!
Bye

Andrea,

just post the SSC (and STC) files here (or directly to me by email).

I suggest that you use only half of the "celestial sphere", instead of a full one (actually, I don't know what is the setup in your system).

Andrea,

I need pictures of the Earth models (3D shape) used by the greeks, or by any other cultural heritage that used the Ptolema??c system.

Cham, the sphere should be seen from all angles.
The Almagest is the catalog of all stars as seen from Alexandria (Aegypt), so it misses only the southernmost part of the celestial sphere, so it must be seen in its totality, in our opinion.
Regarding the map request of your previous post, the one I posted is the exact one for Ptolemy's age.
I understand you wish a bigger one, but the only two possibilities are: to upscale this one (useless, IMO) or to draw yourself another one.
It's your choise.
Regarding the ssc and stc files, we must wait for Buggs return from holiday, he is their author and I don't know if he likes to spread an unfinished work like this is actually.
But can you give a solution to the missing globes/labels problem?
It's not a problem of ssc or stc files, it's a code problem, IMHO.
Without solving it, all our work is practivcally useless, alas!
Bye

Chris, I used

Code: Select all

 set {name "MinOrbitSize"  value 3.0}

as suggested by Vincent.
I'm using 1.4.1

Try setting it to a smaller value--1.0, or even 0.5.

Cham, here is a shot of how the texture I've just given shows "on the job":
