Ok here we go!
This add-on was originally made by Frank Gregorio, I added some features from Runar Thorvaldsen "Portrait of Our Sun" add-on and created the new red dwarf texture myself. The actual texture is a cloudmap that floats over the default red dwarf texture used in Celestia. I have included 2 .ssc files with this. One has the flares options and the other doesn't. To use the .ssc without the flares you will have rename it from .ssc1 to .ssc. This is considered a beta add-on, meaning there is much room for improvement, namely I need to rework the Red Dwarf texture a little more so it doesn't appear so stretched at the equatorial zones. Again this was just made as a proof of concept. If anyone wished to continue to work or tweak it please be my guest, just be sure you share your work with everyone and post your additions.
Thanks and enjoy!

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

TWEAK 1:
This is not really an addition or enhancement, just a better way (IMO) of organising the SSC files which will give more flexibility in enabling/disabling the features.
Separate the texture code from the flares code as follows:
1. Rename Gliese_581.ssc to Gliese_581_texture.ssc
2. Rename Gliese_581.ssc1 to Gliese_581_flares.ssc
3. Remove the flares code from the first file and paste it into Gliese_581_flares.ssc (replacing existing contents).

Chuft,
Wouldn't be easir to simply rename the appriate files versus coping and pasting into the other?
Or simply make copies of .ssc files and give them the name you want.

Just a quick note:
The radius of gliese 581 is wrong. We have it too large. It should be about 120000 km, not 570000. Don and I are fixing it. It is a bit complicated in that the flare textures have to be carefully resized. We also have to make the overlay planet larger than the actual star so that it covers the existing star. I have asked Runar to help us redo the radii. We'll issue a revised add-on in the next few days.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well Don.Don. Edwards wrote:Chuft,

I think you assumed that people will use one version or the other (flares or no flares) and never change it, however what I was suggesting is a way to make it easier for a user to enable or disable flares whenever they like.
Because each of your files has the same name (when enabled) users would have to disable one and enable the other every time they wanted to switch between the two.
By having the texture in a file by itself, and the flares in it's own file, the texture can be always on, and then to enable/disable flares requires merely enabling or disabling the flares file -- as long as it has a different filename (when enabled) from the texture file.
The names wouldn't have to be what I suggested as long as one file contains ONLY texture definition, and the other one contains ONLY flares definition, and the filenames are distinct...
NOTE: This also means you can have flares only (if you disable the texture file instead of the flares file) -- although this does look rather strange.
PS. I'm not insisting you re-package this my way. It's perfectly OK as it is , and it's simple enough for anyone who wishes to follow my procedure to repackage it themselves. (In fact, it would take them far less time than it's taken me to write this post )

Chuft-Captain,
I get you now, a good idea. As far as I am concerned this is an open add-on. Anyone can do what they wish and add links to the modified work, or give a link to me and I can host it with the original and make a link here. Of course we must keep in mind who made the originals, and the acompaning read-me files need to go along with them in addition to any additional read-me files that get added as it goes on.
Frank, who originaly made the basic add-on, has discovered that the star is acualy the wrong size and he is changiing that himself. This will also mean that the orbit for the flares have to be ajusted as well. He is contacting Runar for instructions on this.
I think I kind of like the idea of making an open project, posting it in its early stages and letting everyone work on it and modify it as time goes by. I very well might do this again in the near future.

Hey Everyone,
I thought I would post a couple of shots of my new texture for Gliese 581, or Red Dwarf stars in general. So have a look and give me some input as to what you all think of it.

Hey Frank,
Its just an illusion. It is orbiting right, the angle just makes it look the way it is.
