Windows XP descontinued in 2008.So what?
I think it??s premature to discuss Celestia under Vista, since the majority of people won??t upgrade rigth now and we will wait until the DX 10 drivers are mature enough.
But I have a concern.Microsoft said he will descontinue Windows XP probably in the beggining of 2008.Since I won??t upgrade my computer until at least mid 2008 and maybe even 2009,I would like to know if you have plans to Celestia not supporting Windows XP anymore,in for exemple,6 months or 1 year.It would be a pity...

Don't worry, Celestia can work easily under Windows 2000 or even 98 . In fact, Microsoft will stop provide patch for Windows XP and probably no technical support for this OS in 2008.
Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2

that is so not true...
official support for windows xp will end 2014 while vistas support will already end in 2012.
also this doesn't apply to security-updates.
I'm still using windows 2000 and have absolutely no reason to upgrade anything. so what?

most recent celestia win32-SVN-build - use at your own risk (copy over existing 1.5.1 release)
But probably even the critical updates won??t be available anymore. So using Windows XP would be a tremendous risk!

phoenix,
this may be true for XP Professional ... but many users have installed XP Home on their PCs at home. I don't think XP Home will be supported until 2014.

critical updates are still available for windows 2000 and believe me when I say that currently windows vista is a way greater security risk than any previous windows still available.
there is really no need to upgrade to vista unless you want to slow down your PC a bit

This is not a Windows support forum, but...
Microsoft has Web pages which explicitly spell out how long their operating systems and other products will be supported.
A definition of their policy is at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy
A brief list of products is at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselect
A full list is at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselectindex
To summarize the information on the pages for the various versions of Windows XP: all versions of Windows XP will be fully supported until at least April 14, 2009. Security updates will be available until at least April 8, 2014. You'll have to pay for a "hotfix agreement" if you want non-security updates between 2009 and 2014.

Danielj,
you missunderstod something here.
The message from Microsoft means that they will stop SELLING Windows XP beginning of 2008.
So in 2008 you won't be able to buy a new PC with Windows XP or only the OS.
Support, Patches and all that will be available as selden said.

Re: Windows XP descontinued in 2008.So what?
Ok,but my point, now, is another.Since Celestia is based on Open GL,what will happen if Open GL is discontinued.Even it??s not the case,Direct X 10 will have a major improvement, but Open GL will be stagnated.Does it mean that more realistic effects and graphics won??t be possible in Celestia?Or there are any plans to change its API?
Daniel,
OpenGL will not be discontinued.
It is continuously being enhanced.
See http://www.opengl.org/
DirectX is Microsoft's proprietary 3D software and is available only for Windows.
OpenGL is available for all modern operating systems, and for quite a few that are not-so-modern.
OpenGL is used in many games and in professional 3D design packages. Many large industries depend on it. Automobile and aircraft companies, for example use it to design cars and airplanes.
And it's used in the software used to design spacecraft, of course.

re
think about moving to one of the Linux flavors like ubanto, fedora, red hat...
or move to a Mac.

Re: re
No,because I like to play games in the computer, too. And a mac is too expensive. But the problem remains. No new driver for 7600 GT under Windows XP,so the support for Open GL 2.1 will be poor.Damn Nvidia!
