It is possible in Celestia with a bit of modding....
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

You can do something very similar if you change the flare.jpg file
However, it'll be used for all stars.

or you could just make a really tiny planet with a ring and give it 0 for distance from the star

Mike,

That doesn't seem to work for me: as soon as you're far enough away for the planet not to be rendered, the rings aren't riendered either.

I'll make a separate entry in the "Bug" forum for this.
sigh.

you have to make the radius almost equal to but a tad more than the radius of the star...also use a semiaxis of 10e-8 instead of 0

but if you make the planet bigger than the star, would the star still be visible?

what you would need to do is texture the planet with the same texture as the star...make it emissive and viola you have your ringed star...You may even at this point change the stars texture and color and using the atmosphere elements change its photosphere...you can then have green or even simulate ultra violet stars eg: Noctis in the eta carinae system I created

There's still the problem of the rings disappearing if you're "too far away". Once the central object is too small to resolve, the rings are diabled, too, even when they should be visible.

Invisible planet, perhaps?
Using transparent .png textures, in principle it should be posible to create invisible planet as big as star.
By the way which windows image editor is compatibile with png format used in celestia?
Celstia won't read my textures.

Modelling Programs

Just curious, what modelling programs do you guys all use to create your customized meshes (e.g. Eta Carinae, PSR 1257 light beams, etc.) :?:
