There is still a huge problem with the MilkyWay rendering, while the observer is inside.
I already made a comment on this before, but since I've updated my CVS installation today, I've found the problem is much worst than ever !
See the straight unatural black line below, all along the MilkyWay. That long gap should be completelly closed. This is **TERRIBLE** :
This gap is visible at any FOV, and it always strikes my eyes while I'm moving around any object. Something MUST be done here.

it's easy to do, since I went through special efforts to generate and display that line as an admittedly primitive emulation of the dark strip in the galactic plane. You may say that my line is to straight, but we do have a dark regime in this region of our galaxy.
I can just take that code out, if more people want it. Please let me know.
I think Cham refers to the present CVS code. My actual code (not yet in CVS) has that line less strong, however.

I think that it is too prominent, but necessary in some form. A while back I suggested code similar to your galaxy code which would render some dark "sprites", for dust. Is that possible? Could you make it equatorial? I understand that you want it as streamlined as possible for memory, while still achieving a certain look.

I really like the dust effect when a galaxy is seen from outside, and have no problem from inside, but I also understand the pain of Cham, who sees a gap. It must be nearly as frustrating as when I see some pictures of the Moon showing convex shapes instead of concave craters; it's hard to escape that first impression.
Keeping aside improvements for the current rendering, what do you think of a GUI option "Render dust" or, much better, a parameter for its intensity (0-10) in some config file to make everybody happy? I won't complain if the code is removed temporarily, but I'd also suffer a bit if you sweep the dust forever.
Cham, have you a cel url for the image? I looked for that strong gap but here it seems much softer.

I suppose that Cham's problem is that the black lane seems too fake because it is perhaps really too regular; if you have a way to give it a bit of noise perhaps it will look more natural...

The long gap is certainly too regular. Its thickness is the same all the way around the Milky way, which isn't natural at all. I suggest two solutions :
1- remove completely that dark line (this is the solution I prefer).
2- Make it less dark, AND wavy in thickness (variable thickness) with some random "holes" on it (dashed, with variations in thickness).
I guess solution 2 means more work for Fridger. That's why I prefer solution #1.
Fridger : by the way, I strongly suggest you commit to CVS all your code on the galaxies (labels with alpha, etc) so we can test it, even if it isn't finished yet.
