I personally love the galaxies. However this /single/ galaxy, as you put it Fridger, is kind of special, no? (a galactocentric opinion :wink:) I think this added effort for the MW is warranted and worth every minute. This is especially true from the educational perspective for Celestia (because we're shooting for semblance of reality). Thank you all for your hard work on MW.


Sure enough, I agree. As I wrote, we shall certainly have the possibility of custom galaxy templates implemented very soon. Then someone with enough storage, patience and CPU power is even free to create a custom "template" ;-) for every single galaxy of the revised NGC/IC catalog ...

Right, but yes we can loose some time to improve the base templates; just think in this:
Actually a classic bmp2pts is between 5000 to 8000 pts.
With the same number of pts we can do much better templates with a better control of the process. The complete automated tool is fine, but unfortunatly for example the program is not enough skilled to really appreciate where to dencify some points, where to put some light etc... It's why I'm asking for more control, even if the process will be longer... (I don't think it will be longer than the actual one indeed :wink:)

Hi,

I managed to improve consequently the Milky Way (SBbc.pts) template using my spreadsheet editor (Excel). The advantage of using a spreadsheet editor is that you can work on a big model (10000 points and more) and then resize/rotate it to place the sun at the right distance from the center (in the Orion arm) without losing any point. And you can finaly set the luminosity very precisely to get a well balanced template between the outside/inside views. This handmade post-production step really optimizes the bmp2pts tool.

Here's the result :

This model will be integrated in the next release celestia_patch_1.4.1 for Windows.

Vincent, that MW looks really great. I guess it looks good from the inside, too.
Is there a way Non-Windows users can download the .pts file somewhere without needing to download the Windows-patch?

Yes, it looks really good from the inside too ! I set the inside luminosity according to Fridger's default SBc.pts model. You can download the SBbc.pts file here :

Rename it Sbc.pts, and then replace your Sbc.pts default model with this one. Just keep in mind that since you don't have the celestia_patch version, all your SBc galaxies will be affected by this change.

I already implemented this in my working copy some time ago. In addition, all DSO rendering calls are sent to the Model class (the *.pts being replaced by CMOD files). The only thing missing is the new "Sprite" primitive Chris alluded to. I don't know his ideas on this, but probably some mesh vertex attributes (tangents, texcoords, normals, etc.) will get another meaning in this "volumetric" context (eg. a normal vector could hold a 'reflection vector' to simulate view-dependent illumination for that specific blob, so it will be brighter when watched from the direction of a nearby star and darker from the opposite. This will allow gaseous structures to be locally illuminated with a "volumetric" feel).

One tricky problem is how we should mass-render the remaining DSOs. I think that clouds of blobs with varying radial distributions would depict globular clusters in a reasonable way, for example (some catalogs use the radial density as a classifying parameter, IIRC). But ideally a Cluster class should also have room for additional real stars, for when the data is available.

Look at line 30 in galaxy.ccp and change the number of points from 7000 to 10000 and more.
