Daniel,

In general, calling something "crude" really isn't all that bad. Unfortunately, however, some people have become rather distressed by the number of criticisms you've posted while making relatively few positive contributions. As a reault, they seem to read more into your postings than you may intend.

I suspect you do enjoy using Celestia, otherwise you wouldn't be spending so much time on the Forum.

What kinds of things have you done with it?
What do you like most about Celestia?
What kinds of Addons do you like? And why?

I specially like the solar system scripts and the "never again updated" Deep Sky Tour.Travelling around the solar system is cool, too.Unfourtanetelly, the Celestia activities hadn??t been worked. When it was to be all OK with the Inner Solar System activity, the Apollo 11 model didn??t appear and the links didn??t work very well, too.
The addons that I most like are the solar system new textures, because it??s like you are really travelling to REAL worlds.I also like Ran II,because it has some beggining of terrain rendering. But although this is cool,I think when is properly implemented,it will need lots of computer processing and only people with a dual core processor,=>2 GB of RAM and 512 MB RAM video card will be able to use it.I am also worried if Celestia 1.5.0 with lots of improvement specially in meshes won??t work in my relativelly humble system:Athlon 64 3000,1 GB RAM and 256 MB Geforce 7600 GT...

I hope this is a joke ;)

danielj,
The reason you may think the cvs-version of Celestia available to you is "raw" is that is missing some of the files and folders?
I would suggest that you download Tortoise-cvs (or some other cvs client) and install it. http://www.tortoisecvs.org/
Read the instructions. After you know what a cvs root is, this is the one to use:

Code: Select all

 :pserver:anonymous@celestia.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/celestia

Then you can download all the files that are missing and copy them into the Celestia (cvs build from phoenix) installation. At that point you will
have a cvs version that is up to date. If you don't like that then you probally wouldn't like a 1.5.0 pre either.

cartrite,

Please remember that Daniel is using v1.4.1 of Celestia. You cannot use the v1.5 catalog files with v1.4.1. My impression is that Daniel's already been bitten by this. Finding the compatible updates is not at all easy, which is part of his frustration.

Like Daniel, I suspect that some of the newer, bigger Addons, like Runar's new version of Ran, will have relatively slow performance on all systems, even those with top-of-the-line 7950 graphics cards.

Runar's an artist who creates models and images with lots of detail. He knows what he's done and expects the results to run at relatively slow frame rates. People who don't realize how "heavy" such an Addon has to be will be disappointed by the low speed (5-10 fps) when so many of the other Addons run at full speed (75 fps or faster).

Heck, we need to be glad we aren't limited to software rendering! Some of the models on Sci-Fi Meshes cause the software renderers take *hours* to generate a single frame. (Of course, there are other factors that can make them so slow, like using ray-tracing.)

Performance is one of the reasons it's taking me so long to come out with my Orion Addon. While it runs relatively quickly on my home system (20-60fps on a 6600GT), it only runs at 4-12fps on an FX5200. And it has only a measly 100K triangles.

I thought danielj was referring to the win-cvs build that is available from phoenix.
I've edited my post to hopefully make it clearer.

I get similar performance with some of my models on my fx 5500. I often wonder what the performance would be on a newer card. But due to a lack of cash I'm still running the fx 5500 on a system board that supports PCI-E and SLI to boot. Oh well, some day.

You don't even need to do any of that though. Phoenix has made a precompiled version of Celestia available for windows users to use - I posted instructions on how to download and install it on this thread:

http://www.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10181

(which admittedly doesn't have an obvious title. Maybe I should just copy that post into a new thread that can be stickied somewhere?). With that Daniel or anyone else can start using 1.5.0 - as it is on the cvs - at least til the full version comes out.

But at the end of the day, he's got to work with what he has - which from the sounds of it is a computer that's good enough to run most applications of Celestia. Ran is a monster addon that would tax even the most up-to-date machines. (and you know what, dual processor doesn't help at all - unless Celestia is going to become multithreaded, it only runs on 1 CPU at a time).

Depends on the user I guess...

I'm rather proud of the fact that I'm a "Crude" person AND a Celestia
supporter.

Have a little humor here guys... Celestia is meant to be scientifically accurate
as well as FUN ain't it?

I created a setup.exe that will install most of the current cvs version of Celestia. See here. http://www.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic ... 8798#78798
