A little help please?

Post #1by Parminio » 28.09.2006, 22:25

I've read for the last hour over this forum and haven't seen anything that has helped yet.

I just downloaded the 1.4 version as I just came across this software today. (MANY thanks to those responsible.)

The problem is it doesn't run worth jack squat on my system. It's VERY slow, VERY chunky, and I'm not getting anything like the lighting and shading that I've seen in some of the pics on the site and in numerous threads. I don't know if I've done something wrong, or if there's something I have yet to do.

My system:

3.6 Ghz P4 HT
NVidia 7900GTX 256 meg PCI XPress
2Gigs Ram
Windows XP Pro

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'm sorry in advance if a cure is posted somewhere that I couldn't find.

Regards,
Parminio

Your not using Nvidia's drivers. You need to install Nvidia's drivers or activate the Nvidia drivers you have installed. Here is a link in case you need to update the driver you do have. http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I have the new release of Forceware installed that was released just this month. Is there something else I need to do? Should I force all settings in the NVidia Forceware rather than leave it on application controlled?

Thanks,
Parminio

Your system is using Microsoft's ancient software implementation of OpenGL and not the hardware accelerated OpenGL that is in the fancy graphics card that you spent so much money on.

Check to make sure hardware acceleration is available (in Display Properties). If so, try turning it on.

However, you also should download and install the most recent drivers from Nvidia's Web site.

Right click on my computer and open manage/device manager and click on the Display Adapters and see whats there.

NVidia 7900 GTX

That's what's in the display adapter in device manager. I've also maxed out every setting in the Forceware Software and still no difference.

I don't get it...I can run Oblivion at 1600 x 1200 32 bit, wide open, max graphics and get 50 fps while fighting multiple enemies, but I can't run this.

I'm stumped.

To new a system maybe?

That sounds tricky. With the display adapter tab expanded right click on NVidia 7900 GTX and see if there is an option to disable or enable. Also there should be a entry for Microsofts drivers. That should be disabled. If it is there would be a red x over it. Are there any yellow ? in device manager?

No need to get a new system . . . Celestia uses OpenGL for 3D graphics, while Oblivion and most other games use Direct3D. Direct3D is installed by default with Windows XP, but OpenGL often isn't, so you have to download drivers from the graphics chip manufacturer. It's usually a good idea to get the latest drivers anyway, because they often have performance improvements and bug fixes.

It's enabled. Nothing is yellowed out.

Like I said, I can run the most graphically intense games in the world wide open, but I can't run this. I don't get it.

For Christ sake, I run GT Lengends at 1280 x 1024, 32 bit, highest quality graphic settings and get 94 fps with 30 cars on the track.

I run GTR at those same settings and get 115 fps.

I'm stumped.

I think you have both drivers enabled. You should disable the Microsoft display adapters. Celestia is using the Microsoft drivers and it will not be able to if they are disabled.

Did you by any chance install an upgrade to DirectX *after* you installed the Nvidia drivers?

If so, then you need to reinstall Nvidia's drivers.
Be sure to use the deinstallation link in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Software menu and reboot before doing the re-install.

DirectX overwrites Nvidia's OpenGL drivers with a malfunctioning Microsoft version.

NVidia updates as it goes, so I didn't touch my DX.

GT Lengends, Oblivion and GTR run in Open GL.

My card runs Open GL 2 on everything. Why this program doesn't see it is beyond me.

New system? You thought I was wanting to buy a new system? Christ on a crutch pal, did you bother looking at my system specs? It is brand new.

I was wondering if THAT was the problem. Jeez.

Never mind.

I installed it on my wife's system. (My old one. 1.5 ghz P4, Windows XP Home, NVidia Geforce 6200, 1 gig ram)

It works perfectly.

Evidently, the software can't see the system I'm on for some reason. I'm wondering if it's because of my PCI Express card. I don't think the software sees it. It can see PCI and AGP, but not PCI Express.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the efforts.

Well, it's not because of the PCI-E card since I'm running a PCI-E card with no problem. It's driver related like has been said allready.

Parmino,

I've been doing a little research: all three games you mention use DirectX, not OpenGL.

Most DirectX games include a copy of DirectX that they'll offer to install for you. I suspect that one of them might have done it without asking, damaging Nvidia's driver.

To convince yourself of this, you should download and run glview: it's a free OpenGL test program for Windows
http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

I'm sure it will tell you that most of the OpenGL functionality is missing.

To install a new copy of Nvidia's driver properly, you must deinstall the old, damaged one using the Control Panel's Add/Remove programs menu. Reboot. Do not accept Windows' offer to install the drivers. Then install the new copy using Nvidia's install program. Don't try to take any shortcuts in the reinstallation procedure. They never work reliably.

Evidence:

GT Legends uses DirectX. See the system requirements listed at http://www.amazon.com/Viva-Media-GT-Leg ... B000BYSX4A

Oblivion uses DirectX, too. See the system requirements listed at http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_faq.htm

And so does GTR. See the system requirements listed at http://www.gtpcc.org/gtpcc/gtrfiagtracinggame.htm

I've had 2 friends of mine download and install this and it doesn't work for them either. (one is a 7900GT like mine, the other a 7900GTX)

I've rolled the driver back to the older version, no dice.

Nothing works.

It works on the older Nvidia cards, but not this one. I hooked up my old 6800 and it worked fine. It works fine on my other system that has a 6200.

Must just be something about the 7900?

Does anybody else here use one?

Does glview work?

What information does it return about the card?
What OpenGL routines does it detect?
