Using textures: Copywritten or Public Domain?

Post #1by doctrellor » 11.09.2006, 21:24

II know it's a strange question, since the textures are creative works and therefore covered under copyright laws, but I was curious, are textures copyright material, when we show a planet from Celestia on our website?

If it is cropyright material, how would we cite it? since the pic is from Celestia...

To be on the safe side, I always ask permission when I use a texture that I know has an author available. For instance, Don Edwards' spectacular Ice Age texture is used, with permission, on my ArcBuilder site as well as the Orion Arm site.

The difficult thing is that many textures have been recycled around the 'Net so much, the original authors are very hard to find. So, basically, when in doubt, don't use it. After all, a lot of people consider their works pieces of art, and rightly so. It is only proper that permission be sought.

As an addition, I'm not certain of the requirements, since the program itself is free and open source, but nonetheless when I use Celestia-generated images, I cite the program and provide a link to the Celestia homepage.
