They seem to be making a habit of this...
See the following about the audio tape lost and found in 2001:

... or could this latest story just be a repeat of an old hoax?

The loss is not a hoax. :(

From what I've read, they seem to have been misplaced when they were returned by the National Archives to Goddard.

I'm not all all surprised,

What I do find hard to believe is that they haven't thought to digitise it before now. The technology's been available for decades.

I would tend to agree with Chuft-Captain, but I work for NASA so... I guess I'm not surprised to find out they haven't done that yet.
