About the new "Developer Talk" subject.

Is it possible for the normal user (like me) to see or to replie the posts of special users (developper like t00fri for exemple :wink:

) ?
I try to create the first post but it don't work because I am not a developper ...

Yes.
But an official developer must be the one to start any thread in that forum.

I don't kow who decided the creation of this new forum, but thank you!

I would prefer an additional group management instead that allow replies to everyone. But this is a beginning. :wink:

I hope that developers will start using this forum extensively, instead than the developers mailing list! In the last few days I guess that I've missed at least a couple of messages. In some case I got only sparse replies. Its difficult to follow the discussions.

I created the new Developer Talk forum not as a replacement for the developers list, but as a supplement to it. Think of it as sort of a blog where people working on Celestia can post about the things they're working on or planning. I'm not sure who else will be interested in contributing, but I know I've got a lot of ideas and status to share.

Other registered users will be able to reply to posts made in the Developer Talk forum, but only members of the "devs" phpBB group will be able to start topics. If you're not in this grounp right now and feel that you ought to be, send me a PM.

Personally, I'm not even worried about replying. I'm merely happy to see this as a place to watch Celestia continue to take shape, and it could give hints to future developments of the program. Looking forward to reading in it!

I personally think you should move all development notes and blogs into one place... It will save on looking in different places... Not that were lazy just that were likely to come here more than sourceforge...

I don't understant why people seem to love webforums so much. They are a usability nightmare: no threading, only very basic searching and it's so easy to miss a post.

Mailing lists are a lot better for development discussions, or any kind of discussion for that matter.

IMHO the answer is in the four threads present at this time in the new forum. I can see only advantages.
People is involved much more, the interest around the new version and the new features is rising.
Sadly the developers except Chris are not using it very much.
For instance Christophe your valuable work on internationalization under windows should have had more visibility.

What is still missing in the development process is the deployment of pre-releases or test releases. So much more people should test the new features and not only the ones that are able to compile the code from CVS.

Paolo, I totally agree with you on the fact that the forum gets more visibility than the mailing list. But it still doesn't explain why people prefer web forums to mailing lists...

Anyway, about the internationalisation, I was a bit reluctant to post anything until I found it to be in a usable state. I think we've reached this stage now, and I could certainly do with users' feedback.

I would have liked a similar rule for the Add-Ons forum, so it could be more focused on actual work than on all kinds of discussion that really should go in the Users Forum. Would be more work to moderate, though.
