Fridger,
I did what you suggested but except the sizes and the impossibility to untar the file download via Windows everything is identical ; I have looked in the files and ( only at the bigining of course  No difference.
Below are the command lines and the (identical bigining of the file).
[root@line celestia125]# file celestia-1.2.5-cvs20021022.tgz
celestia-1.2.5-cvs20021022.tgz: GNU tar archive
[root@line celestia125]# cd /usr/local/Celestia/celestia125/new_essai
[root@line new_essai]# file celestia-1.2.5-cvs20021022.tgz
celestia-1.2.5-cvs20021022.tgz: GNU tar archive
begining of the downloaded file identical under Windows and Linux
celestia/acconfig.h0100644000076500007650000000052407416371572013623 0ustar chrischris#undef HAVE_LIBSM
/* The directory where our data will be installed in */
#undef CONFIG_DATA_DIR
.....
I still donot understand. But again the linux file has been untar and I hope it works (I did not haveyet time to work on it.
Thanks for your interest

Really, I have no idea what your problem is. It is certainly NEITHER related to Christophe's archive NOR to the CVS version he has packaged for you...
In order to confirm my own opinion about this issue, I have downloaded the archive celestia-1.2.5-cvs20021022.tgz
just now. It arrives NOT as a tgz archive with my Netscape, but as a tar archive, which is immediately verified by renaming the file to some name 'test', say and calling 'file test'. Then I used tar -xvf test which perfectly unpacked within 2 seconds and thereafter from within the resulting 'celestia' directory:
aclocal -I macros
autoconf
automake
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
The /total/ effort (inclusive 1500 KB/s download (!) from Christophe's site) took 3 minutes at best!!
The compiled Celestia-1.2.5-CVS is just displaying a beautiful io on my office machine...
After following your unsuccessful discussion for days and days now, I can only recommend to get yourself a working Linux or something else installation. Unfortunately, as so often problems are implicitly associated with Celestia while the are really due to inappropriate installations.
Good luck
Bye Fridger
Fridger,
Read my last message, I have now internet connection to linux in my office and I could unpacked the Christophe package without problem. I just wanted to understand why the unpacking did not work if downloaded with Windows. This has nothing to do with celestia or Christophe packing. Again I just wanted to understand but now forget it is no longer important matter!!
Thanks again

I am sorry, I overread one important sentence in your message. But the whole story since some time really sounds somewhat "complex" I must admit;-)...
Unfortunately, I only have slow modem access via Windows (ME). Otherwise, I would have also undertaken the effort to check what bothers you there since such a long time.
