Other spacecraft?

Post #1by peteuplink » 18.06.2006, 20:18

I just downloaded this today, and It's really cool. However, I was wondering if there are any flyable/controlable space craft add-ons available?

That is not possible. You can script an object to follow a trajectory of your design, but that is not interactive. You use an XYZ file for this: this is a plain text file that holds coordinates and dates, and is assigned to the object via a SSC (Solar System Catalog) file.

Celestia does not come with its own "spaceship". However, there are at least 20 fictional spaceships that add-on designers have crafted. There is also the Space Shuttle model.

You can download these spaceships for free from the Motherlode website, but they are not all in one spot. Typically, they are part of a much larger add-on. For example, there is a "Celestia 1" spaceship which is used in the Educational Activities. Then, there are spaceships in most of the fictional solar systems designed as add-ons and available in the "fictional" section of Motherlode. They come large and small. There are at least five spacecraft from Star Wars, six to eight craft from the StarTrek series, at least ten craft from fictional worlds, etc.

You can download the entire add-on which will include those craft, then edit their "ssc" files (which tell Celestia where to put them), so that you can set them up in any orbit you wish. Using the "track" command in Celestia, you can then see them pass by. However, you cannot interactively control which way they turn or travel in space. They are on specified paths.

Hope this helps.

Frank
