In many ways, it would be easier to paint the clouds with a brush: much better control... But in recent years
i have gotten lazy... Not a bottle of turpentine in sight... I have even stopped
doing watercolor work, which i have always greatly enjoyed, in favor of the mac...

Sure, i have tested Paint, long time ago: i am sure it is better now than
then... But this does not really appeal to me - to simulate one tool with
another, i mean. I like doing design and artwork on the mac - with the
techniques and tools that is available there. And i like paper, too... For different reasons.

Anyhow, the wubs are everywhere!
Each one some 500-1000 meters wide...

Yes, on that pic we are just 30 kilometers above the surface (1024k png
tiles at level 10): this is at the extreme end of what my computer can handle...
So, there is no point in doing more detail than this. And for an eventual
release, i will probably reduce it to 512k DDS tiles anyway: it will simply
be too big to distribute otherwise, and most people couldn??t use it.

White is most opaque, red is mostly transparent, showing the surface
cloud texture below. Here we are very far down, but the wubs orbit an
invisible sphere that takes them from 90 kilometers up down to 25: this
lets them fly through the upper cloud layer so that one can be totally
immersed in clouds, and the resolution is 128k both above and below.

Depends on which way they're flying. If they're heading towards the horizon, they look like giant dragonflies. If they're heading towards the "camera", then they actually look like a flock of Quetzalcoatlus!

Regardless, it is a lovely image, and my new wallpaper here at work!

Damn, sharp eyes you have. They are modelled after dragonflies, with only one set of (much larger) wings, and a shorter, thinner body.

I'd like to see the ssc for all those bird models!

It won??t be too exiting: just a couple of models orbiting an invisible sphere orbiting inside the planet. But i??ll post it when it is completed if you want.

Apparently so... but if it's as close as it looks it's going to end up grazing the atmosphere or being broken up by tidal forces.

For the name, you can -you must read the short story by the great Phil Dick (The first one he published, IIRC).
For the nice mesh, as I noticed in my French catalog http://jeam.tag.free.fr/CELESTIAhtml/CelestiaAddons-SF-BillowMaidens5.htm even if their representation returns to a speculation of Carl Sagan it evokes (for me) the inhabitants of Jupiter's clouds, like A.C. Clarke (Rendez-vous with Medusa -a short story) or James Tiptree Jr (Up the Walls of the Worlds -a novel), for example, have created. BTW, the models by Runar are, as usual, very nice . Jeam
