Give me the adress, I really need some!!

Now, if you didn??t spend all those hours detailing the toaster in
Atlantis??cockpit (which we are all very happy for), you would
find time ;-)

Seriously, it does take about a year to produce... With an hour here and
an hour there...

Ran is probably the most detailed fictional solar system I have come across anywhere... seriously impressive work here.

I'll need to look into getting a serious graphics card, I can tell.

Me, too... :-)

A view from one of the second gas giants moons:Image
... The structure in front has a history one can follow, of course. I have expanded a bit on the background story.
PS to ElChristou: this time the poly count is good: not a single polygon is below ground! :-)
Polishing the models is actually one of the most important aspects of this upgrade.

- and here, the gas giant itself:
moons:Image

... Both of these - Fialar and Hefring - has gotten an overhaul here: more
detail, and more realistic texturing close up. Some tricks picked up from
painting clouds on Saturn...

Yours, Runar, are among the few screenshots that I save and use for wallpaper.

I KNOW that I need to get a new vid card....!

Have you ever considered actually using a raytracer to render images of these systems? You've got so much detail there it would definitely be worth a try.

No, i am not interested in that. One of the cool things
about Celestia is the 3D possibilities. To me, that is far
better than static 2D even though one can??t pack the
same resolution into the scene: an image from Celestia
is an introduction to a place the user can explore in their
own way.

If the scenery is not as ultra-detailed, the interactive aspects
are much greater... JTPS is an example of an effort in this
direction.

Painting clouds on Hefring: it is sort of an exploration in preparation for a
more detailed Saturn... But the possibility in Celestia is limited to two
texture layers, and it is complicated by the weird bug that breaks virtual
textures on ringed planets (see here: http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9557)

Anyway, this is right above the upper cloudlayer of Hefring, looking
directly at the largest moon, Fialar - through the ring system:

Image

This is two level 10 textures on top of each other, giving a very prominent 3d-effect when moving around on the surface. The rings is a separate
3ds model since the ssc definition of rings won??t work with this texture...

8O What about this artefact visible in the ring not far from the moon?

A Wub? Are they tasty? :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beyond_Lies_the_Wub

The view of the rings from the planet still breaks my head though... it's just so strange to see! (of course this sort of thing is why I love these visualisations :) )

Well, all the models are new - sort of: i am working on simplifying them
and upgrade them at the same time. Doing more with graphics mapping,
less with poly??s - and eliminating everything that is unneccecary. The
model in the screenshot weighs just 30% of the original, but looks more
detailed - and it is still in production.

Chuft-Captain wrote:wot's a wub?
As Malenfant shows, the name comes from a classic Phil Dick story from
the 50s. But the concept is more modern, i came across it in something by
Carl Sagan on what kind of lifeforms might thrive on jovians.

Hm? There is no photoshop manipulation, this is straight screendumps
from Celestia...

Malenfant wrote:A Wub? Are they tasty?

Well, you??d probably have to inhale them, they mostly consist of gas... ;-)

Sure..but your are talking about "painting clouds" etc.
so I suppose you do this with some software rather
than with a wet brush ;-) ...also those Wubs are not
part of Celestia's official distribution...
