Ran is probably the most detailed fictional solar system I have come across anywhere... seriously impressive work here.

I'll need to look into getting a serious graphics card, I can tell.

PS to ElChristou: this time the poly count is good: not a single polygon is below ground! :-)
Polishing the models is actually one of the most important aspects of this upgrade.

... Both of these - Fialar and Hefring - has gotten an overhaul here: more
detail, and more realistic texturing close up. Some tricks picked up from
painting clouds on Saturn...

Have you ever considered actually using a raytracer to render images of these systems? You've got so much detail there it would definitely be worth a try.

No, i am not interested in that. One of the cool things
about Celestia is the 3D possibilities. To me, that is far
better than static 2D even though one can??t pack the
same resolution into the scene: an image from Celestia
is an introduction to a place the user can explore in their
own way.

If the scenery is not as ultra-detailed, the interactive aspects
are much greater... JTPS is an example of an effort in this
direction.

Painting clouds on Hefring: it is sort of an exploration in preparation for a
more detailed Saturn... But the possibility in Celestia is limited to two
texture layers, and it is complicated by the weird bug that breaks virtual
textures on ringed planets (see here: http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9557)

Anyway, this is right above the upper cloudlayer of Hefring, looking
directly at the largest moon, Fialar - through the ring system:

This is two level 10 textures on top of each other, giving a very prominent 3d-effect when moving around on the surface. The rings is a separate
3ds model since the ssc definition of rings won??t work with this texture...

Sure..but your are talking about "painting clouds" etc.
so I suppose you do this with some software rather
than with a wet brush ;-) ...also those Wubs are not
part of Celestia's official distribution...
