World Wind

Post #1by cartrite » 22.04.2006, 14:50

Hi All,

There was an update to version 1.3.4 available at :

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

After I installed it I noticed that the Mars offline addon that was installed on my system suddenly became online which made a lot of servers accessible including Themis, Mola, MDIM, etc. I also noticed a Sloan Digital Sky Survey icon on my desktop. Pretty cool stuff.

Thanks. The v1331 wasn't not so old, IIRC? I will update the note in my page of links. Jeam

This new version allows the use of 7 servers for the Mars addon. The planet is in 3d and has various exaggerations. It's pretty quick too. Even with my minimum system requirements.

World wind might be one of the reasons for me to install XP alongside OS X on my MacBook pro.
Besides mars data, does it have much to offer that Google Earth hasn't?

julesstoop,

I haven't used Google Earth in quite a while so........
But WW has access to NGBM data for every month and LandSat servers to get in very close in spots that are covered. I just started using WW again so I'm still discovering new features.

A couple of screenshots you may be familiar with:

Ah, Ok, I'm remembered that the Mars features/spin-of of WW was developped as an addon Work-in-Progress that desappeared when they have changed their server, 2 years ago (A pity: the old version of WW can't work) ... but i never follow very precisely. So, I have no time to explore all the new things, can you send to me a little summary about new options (and direct links), please, I would update my page with good recent infos, but can't re-install and verify all this stuff for the moment, sorry...

Ah, and about what i called 'Simulateurs cartographiques' (Cartographic Sims, in English, I guess) on my pages, the first one i discovered was WW, and, sorry, I really discoverd and practice 'Keyhole' only when it was turned in a free access prog under the name of... Google Earth!

It seems to me that WW uses real-colored tiles, instead of the false-colors used by GE, or I am wrong???

BTW, the proposals of this two similar sim are a little bit different, and I don't know what is the better one in this category, as I can say 'Celestia est le meilleurs programme d'astronomie' and 'Orbiter est le meilleur programme d'astronautique'..
GE, all the world can use and see how it works (and don't work: see the Keyhole/GE community forums about the numberous disfunctions/jokes/etc..), WW isn't well-known, but is a prog I like very well.
Jeam

PS: A little, little thing: the cartographic dept in France (Institut G?©ographique National) is on the way to offer a similar soft for the many many differents cartographies of this territories, France and, I suppose, surrounding areas: 2D visuals this summer, and 3D functions in the beginning of next year. This will be "G?©oPortail".
I've planned to present GP on my pages when it will work.

PPS: these cartographic progs were useful to point a localisation: I used GE to add some Celestians locs in a little ssc, some weeks ago; see the thread about celestians locs in this forum...

Until yesterday I had WW version 1.3.3.1 installed with the Mars offline addon and the moon offline addon, and the BMNG addon. With that version I had full features of the Earth but the moon and mars only worked with files stored on my computer. The update to 1.3.4 turned on the offline versions so they can go online now. I'm not sure if all these addons come with the 1.3.4 version or not.

Also I think I remember people saying that Europe (people living there) had problems accessing the LandSat servers in the past.

WW has false color servers too.

I really didn't have time to check out this page but it seems to be a link to the various addons if they don't come with the full install package.

Thanks cartrite :)
My parents live somewhat to the west of the depicted region.

It looks quite different from Google earth I must say. Might be interesting to look into indeed. Still waiting for the next beta of Boot camp though. Don't want to destroy the data on my MacBook jst for fun.

This is absolutely what I remember: I have (not in activity on my computer, but as copies)
Mars_global_geology.exe
Olympus_mons_structural_features.exe
Worldwind_1.2d_Mars256.exe
Worldwind_1.2d_UseProxy.exe
Worldwind_1.3-(Offline)_1.0.exe
Don't remember if one of these addons were ever distributed with online connection, even on the old server :?: . Jeam

[Edit] These addon were founded on the WW forums, IIRC, not in the general distribution...
