Help with 16k moon surface map by Praesepe

Post #1by osmium » 19.04.2006, 08:31

Hi,

I seached the forum (as perviously advised) for info on this file but I am still confused 8O as to where I put this file/install info, it is a DDS. I have tried various configurations, i.e unzip into extras or addons or textures medres etc but still no glorious moon images. any help from forum would be most appreciated also (still learning about this) should I instead use the VT version.

Cheers

Osmium, you must change the solarsys.ssc file

Code: Select all

"Moon" "Sol/Earth"
{
   Texture "moon.*"

giving instead of "moon*" the correct name of praesepe's file.

In general, it's best not to edit Celestia's files. You'll lose all of those changes if you upgrade Celestia "in place."

Instead you can create a short SSC file in the extras directory that modifies Celestia's database. Here's an example:

Code: Select all

Modify "Moon" "Sol/Earth" {
    Texture "name-of-vt.ctx"
}

Better would be to put the VT folders and files in \textures\hires\ and rename (only) its .CTX file to be moon.ctx.

Then you can use the r and R commands to switch between Celestia's textures and your new hires VT.

Thank you both for your prompt responses.

I will follow you Selden on this one as I find the alternate res function extremely handy. will give it a go now & keep you posted.

Thanks again

Yes, the concept is the same, only the files are different. Put the file in the \hires\ folder and rename the image file to be moon.whatever (don't change the filetype).

When a Texture entry specifies a name that ends in ".*" Celestia automatically looks for .PNG, .JPG and .DDS files, in that order. All of the Texture entries in Celestia's .SSC files specify that wildcard filetype.

Hi,

well I moved said file to Celestia>textures>hires and renamed file to just moon.dds(well I think thats what I did :? !) and well it seems to all work just fine :D using the res change facility.(Shift + R)

thank you yet again Selden

moon looks fab...but a bit ...green?

hopefully I may now be getting the hang of this & stop hassling you guys with what must seem to be such basic stuff :lol:

very gratefully yours
