Steve Albers textures

Post #1by guest jo » 03.04.2006, 21:40

Do the textures( http://laps.noaa.gov/albers/sos/sos.html#SATURN ) from Steve Albers match with the conventions in celestia ?
I would like to use enceladus 8k.

Steve's maps are shifted 180 degrees in longitude compared to what Celestia requires. His maps have +/- 180 in the center. Celestia assumes 0 is in the center.

In other words, you have to cut them in half and swap the left and right halves of his maps.

Or you could edit the SSC file and add 180 to the RotationOffset:

Code: Select all

Modify "Enceladus" "Sol/Saturn" {
Texture "enceladus-by-steve.jpg"
RotationOffset      142.9
}

Yes, thank you. I just compared with the default texture in celestia and I made an offset with THE GIMP. It works easier then what I thought.
Now I am encouraged enough to try to get this slight blueish colour into it , just have to look if its in visible light or only in false colour pictures.

Thanks a lot.

During the downtime I had some downtime and made a texture for enceladus based on Steve Albers 8k texture.

I only wanted to see the nice blue effect of the NASA false-colour images.
So it??s more a fiction texture cause I only worked with colour-overlays created from the non coloured texture from Steve.

Thanks to Steve and the downtime and to chris for all these little miracles.

Here another one:
Mimas from Steve Albers combined with original celestia texture to fill the black gaps and recoloured.

And another one:
Europa 4k from Steve Albers and Jupiter 4k.
Europa looks even much better than a 8k VT that I got from somewhere...

Image

BTW would it be allowed to release a moon package with modified and unmodified Steve Albers textures ?

Guest Jo,

Sounds good to me if you'd like to package up my textures into a more compatable Celestia format. I'd be interested to see some of your modified textures, for example the one of Mimas with the black areas filled in. Some refinements like that might be nice for my website as well if you'd like to trade back and forth. You might mention with your release the link to my website as I'm often making updated versions. Most recently I've been working on some refinements to Iapetus.

Nobody needs to cut such textures in half. All image manipulation programs (GIMP, PS,...) have an option "Wrap around" . That needs to be activated. Then you just offset the texture by 1/2 * width in x-direction. It's utterly trivial.

In GIMP for example you find the respective functionality via

Layer -> Transform -> Offset

in the dialog popping up just enter 1/2*width into the x-field and hit OK. Save...

Search for "kalbjpg.zip" files.

Or is the search function not working with word fragments ?
I don??t know...

Hello guest jo, the following file names have not been accepted by eMule, so are still unavailable :cry:

mimas2kalbjpg.zip
enceladus8kalbjpg.zip
tethys4kalbjpg.zip
dione4kalbjpg.zip
rhea4kalbjpg.zip
iapetus4kalbjpg.zip

If I can give you a suggestion, submit them to Motherlode, in a few days they will be ready for downloading.
Please! 8)
Thanks a lot

After my nightly dsl forced disconnect and reconnect my emule didn??t get the new ip but now it should work.

I loaded the first file to ml about a week ago... and the next problem is the 8MB limit of motherlode. Even if I separate the two enceladus textures in two zip packages they are too big and I am not willing to deal with FTP or whatever, in fact this whole uploading takes more time than working on the textures.

OK guest jo, now I found all files, and requested them. :D
Can you please kindly tell me the GMT time in which I can find your PC on line? :wink:
Thanks a lot.

Nice, I??ll stay online the night until monday 9 pm GMT.
Afterwards mostly between 4 pm and 10 pm but if you are downloading i wont kick you out.
I have max upload 19 kB/sec and no other files running.
Only one dummy file so that my emule requests something sometimes, otherwise I think it will again lose the ip during provider-disconnect.

Hope the files are ok for you, I like enceladus in blue very much...

I've just finished downloading Dione, and Mimas is 50%.
Very kind indeed.
Surely I'll enjoy your textures, what I have seen in your post is a warranty. :wink:

Only some cosmetics, the real work did Steve Albers but for people who want to be only users it is easier to install a complete package ready for celestia.
