I downloaded a ship add-on but it wont show up in Celestia.

You need to tell us exactly what Addon you downloaded, where you downloaded it from and what you've done to try to see the ship. There are too many different possible problems you might have encountered for us to guess.

I got the X-Wing add-on from the star wars section. i am new to celestia so i have no idea what to do to get the model on.

That Addon can't work by itself. It includes a Readme.txt which explains the other Addon that must be installed first.

Since psychology seems to dictate that a file called "readme" never ever gets read, especially not by the people who should read it, maybe it would be better to go with "DO NOT READ.txt" or something... :roll:
