Dear Andy:

Thank you for your compliments. I'm delighted you (and perhaps your students) are enjoying the educational journeys through Celestia space.

Celestia 1.4.0 is similar to FT 1.2 and the instructions for modifying the Activities to use FT 1.2, will also work for version 1.4.0 final. However, version 1.4.1 is coming out in a few days. It has some important bug fixes that are present in 1.4.0 final. There is also an exciting new version of Celestia 1.4.1 that incorporates the ability to display a spaceship cockpit on the view screen, and play sound internally from within Celestia. Both of those features are so exciting that I am modifying all of my Activities to incorporate them. Once done, you will not only be able to go into space in the Celestia 1 spaceship, you will also see its cockpit controls lit up in front of you, and hear its radar pings and the roar of its hyperdrive engines coming on.

I will be updating all of the Activities on the Motherlode to use this special edition of 1.4.1. I expect everything to be done within a week or so.

If you can wait that long, and assuming version 1.4.1 comes out within the next week, look for an announcement on the forum about my updated educational activities. I will send all the updates to Motherlode for posting as soon as done. I will also upgrade my CD set to incorporate these changes, should you wish to buy the CD set and have everything self-install in one easy step (no laborous downloads). Should that interest you, send me a private message or email and I'll give you the details.

:D

In the last two weeks, the Celestia program has been updated to a new released Windows and LInux version named 1.4.0 final. The volunteers who work on the MAC version of Celestia are preparing that latest release in MAC format as well. I hope they will be done within the next week or so.

As soon as they are done, I will get the Educational Activities optimized for use with the MAc version of 1.4.0 final and will release them on the Motherlode website.

Please stay tuned. I'll keep you informed. It hopefully will all be ready within two weeks or so.

Frank

I am eagerly awaiting the Educational Activities for Mac OS X.
Do you have an updated forecast of when they will arrive?
I would be willing to test a pre-release version and report any issues.

Thanks

Why are there two different versions of Celestia? (Celestia & Celestia ED)
Couldn't the normal Celestia have the CLI too so that it would be possible to run the Educacional Activity scripts? Or are there more changes made that I don't know about...

Eigher way it would be nice to eliminate the ED version and make all scripts run on Celestia.

Just my two cents.

Until version 1.4.0, the regular version of Celestia could not be used with the Educational Activities because there were certain features required by the activities that were custom-designed for the Celestia-ED version by forum volunteers working with me.

Those features were subsequently incorporated into Celestia version 1.4.0 and are now present in version 1.4.1. Theoretically, it will be possible to use the default version of Celestia for the Activities. However ....

Some NEW features have been introduced into Celestia that I am updating my Activities to take full advantage of. Specifically, the two main NEW features are the ability to display "overlays", and the ability to launch SOUND from inside Celestia. They have not yet made it into Celestia version 1.4.1. They are great features and they will make the educational journeys even more immersive and stimulating. If that means you have to use a customized version of Celestia, so what?

Another point to consider is where the Activities are placed. The Educational journeys use a folder named "Celestia-ED", which can be loaded with all the add-ons, files, etc. required by the Activities, without disturbing a user's regular Celestia folder. Most folks prefer it this way, since they may have their own add-ons in their Celestia folder which they do not want to disturb.

I expect that a completely new update to all Activities will be done in a few more days (perhaps within a week). Since I don't have a MAC, I cannot test them out on an Apple computer so I must rely on others to test them and find any bugs. I have been using DirkPitt for that, but he is a busy guy and I have to be patient.

If you are willing to serve as my MAC beta tester, email me back and I'll send you some updated files to get you started.

Regards,

Frank

Yes, sorry but I just moved countries and my new home lacks Internet access and I need to wait at least a month to get it. :( Perhaps during that time someone would be willing to fill in for me in getting an OS X version of Celestia-ED ready. I can still provide instructions on how to patch and compile a package.

Frank,

sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I was expecting the list to email me if there were any new posts on this thread.

I would love to test Celestia-Edu for you.
I have a 15" PowerBook 1.25GHz 1GB RAM.
I will send you a regular email.

Do you mean that some new features have been put into standard Celestia or Celestia-EDU?

I am not sure whether you posted this before the release of 1.4.1. Will these features be in 1.4.1 or 1.4.2?

If they are in standard Celestia then the only difference between the 2 versions will be the install location?

Felixo:

The update is complete, at least for use with Windows. I got your email and I have already sent you some files to beta test on 1.4.1 for the MAC.

The new features that I have taken advantage of involve both features present in 1.4.1, and features that have been coded into a customized patch for 1.4.1. So far, that patch is available as code so that anyone can add it to the Celestia program code, and it is also available as a compiled file for Windows. I don't yet know if it is available for the MAC, but that would not be hard to do.

Look for me email reply.

If there is anybody around who could send me a patched 1.4.1 for Mac OS X that would be great.

Failing that some help on compiling under XCode would be appreciated.
