I've been away for a few days.
Right now I've got no access via FTP to the CML, so I can't
exchange the file at the moment. I will add the new file this
evening (approx. 20.00 UT). Please be patient.
I will de-activate the file until the new one is online.

How come that ML is so fast tonight? I am getting 600-800 KB/s which means that the 511 MB are downloaded in just above 10 minutes....

In the rare cases I tried the ML before, it was barely above 50 KB/s...

This texture is really nice! I have downloaded all 5 levels and converted the tiles to gzipped DDS format. The whole lot is just 1.3 GB in size ...almost nothing ;-)

It loads quite fast and smooth and looks great!

I think you corvert the png files by DXT1 (similar of jpeg quality...), don't you ? :wink:

Well, that's a part of it.
Yes, I converted the png files to dds (DXT1), as I mentioned above. Additionally I compressed every image file with gzip, resulting in image files with the .dds.gz format. This can directly be used in Celestia using the patch I described in this thread:
http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8866
This is saving 3,3 GB of space in this case, and is working without any performance penalty (at least on my system). As toofri argued, the performance impact (or gain!) depends on your setup - most of all hard disk speed.

Steffen & everybody else,

that's good news and I shall look into your dds.gz patch as soon as I find a little time.

+++++++++++
Could anyone using Fightspit's level 4 and level 5 Earth base texture help sort out an issue I am having with them:
+++++++++++

For reasons of clarity, I only use the base texture VT's of Fightspit, with everything else switched off. Up to level 3 (inclusive) everything is fine and of beautiful quality.

However level4 and notably level5 show occaionally some tiles in black i.e. MISSING, but not always at the same place. Most often I see this effect north of the black sea. Also Celestia-KDE crashes occasionally at these levels.
I am using the last CVS code, but this should be practically identical to the final 1.4.1 release. My card is FX5900Ultra/256 MB and the driver is very recent.

Who can confirm this? I checked the size and the number of Fightspit's tiles. They look OK (meanwhile).

Here is an example, but don't give up too early, it may take a while, and the bug shows up ONLY at level 4 and above!

Can you specifie the location of the bug on the Earth, please ?
I want to check myself on my computer ?

Thanks to report this bug.

edit:

I use the "images viewer" in my folder and all it is OK, here an exemple of level 4:

Fightspit,

the problem is that the bug cannot be seen on the tiles themselves. I also inspected them already and they look OK. I think it is rather a bug in the Celestia rendering code.

For example, Chris "fixed" recently the rendering of level 11,12 tiles (of much smaller size) than your 2k x 2k tiles.

Thanks for this info and I will explore again all the surface on my Earth to be sure that there isn't any bug.

edit: In Celestia 1.4.1 under Windows XP, I haven't fond any bugs, it is OK for me.

Hello Fridger, I'm enjoying too the wonderful VT by Fightspit, and I'm trying to add normals, specs, nightlights etc.
But I didn't succeed in. :cry:
Can you please kindly tell me what set of VTs you used for this purpose, and where did you put them?
I have installed them as follows:
extras/
---Addons/
-----128K Blue Marble Next Generation/
--------textures/
------------hires/
----------------BMNG
----------------earth-spec-hs-32k
----------------earth-normals-hs-32k
but nothing happens for specs and normals. :cry:
Moreover, where have I to put Don's land_ocean_ice_lights_aurora_8k.dds that I modified in .png?
I put it in the usual medres, but doesn't work. :cry:
Sorry for trouble, but I think this VT is worth of all the effort. :wink:
Bye and thank you.

Have you modify the BMNG.ssc file in BMNG folder ?

Fightspit wrote:Have you modify the BMNG.ssc file in BMNG folder ?

Hello Fightspit, following you'll see my BMNG.ssc file (but it is in the 128K Blue Marble Next Generation folder, not in BMNG, while the BMNG.ctx - earth-normals-hs-32k.ctx - earth-spec-hs-32k.ctx are all in the hires folder, shown in my previous post:

128K Blue Marble Next Generation/
----textures/
---------hires/
----------------BMNG
----------------earth-spec-hs-32k
----------------earth-normals-hs-32k

Is it correct?):

Code: Select all

AltSurface "128K Blue Marble Next Generation" "Sol/Earth"
{
   Texture "BMNG.ctx"
   HazeColor [ 1 1 1 ]
   HazeDensity 0.05
   SpecularColor [ 0.5 0.5 0.55 ]
   SpecularPower 3.0
}

I modified the haze and specular power only.
Do you mean that I have to put here the info regarding spec and normal VTs?
Here is the earth-normals-hs-32k.ctx file

Code: Select all

VirtualTexture
{
        ImageDirectory "earth-normals-hs-32k"
        BaseSplit 0
        TileSize 512
        TileType "jpg"
}

and here the earth-spec-hs-32k.ctx file

Code: Select all

VirtualTexture
{
        ImageDirectory "earth-spec-hs-32k"
        BaseSplit 0
        TileSize 512
        TileType "dds"
}

And where have I to put clouds and nightlights, not VT but .png files? :oops:
Thank you for your kind reply.
Bye

Andrea :D

Hi Andrea, every map needs to be pointed to in the same AltSurface definition,if you wish to see them all together.Here is mine using my textures

Code: Select all

AltSurface "JMII DDS" "Sol/Earth"
{
   Texture "JMII DDS.ctx"
        NightTexture "JNight DDS.ctx"
        NormalMap "JNormal DDS.ctx"
   HazeColor [ 0.43 0.62 0.95 ]  #[ 1 1 1 ]
   HazeDensity 0.35       #0.25
   SpecularColor [ 0.85 0.75 0.55 ] #[ 0.5 0.5 0.55 ]
   SpecularPower 55.0  #55
}

I have no mention of SpecularTexture as it is already on the JMII DDS texture,but you will need to add this also for Fightspits texture.Hope this helps,Jestr

Code: Select all

AltSurface "128K Blue Marble Next Generation" "Sol/Earth"

   SpecularTexture "earth-spec-hs-32k.ctx"
   NormalMap "earth-normals-hs-32k.ctx"

Edit: You have forgotten to specify the Specular and Normal Map in ssc file, it is very important.

Hello Jestr and Fightspit, thanks a lot for your help. :D
But I have a doubt still alive: I don't find where to put the NON-VT files like Don's land_ocean_ice_lights_aurora_8k.dds
that I've converted to .png. :cry:
After modifying the solarsys.ssc file, I put it in the medres folder in the Celestia main root, but I don't see it. :cry:
The same happens putting it in the addons texture directory. :cry:
Where am I making mistakes? :oops:
Thank you.
Bye

I think your file is a Night Texture:

Code: Select all

{
   Texture "BMNG.ctx"
   NightTexture "land_ocean_ice_lights_aurora_8k.dds"
   SpecularTexture "earth-spec-hs-32k.ctx"
   NormalMap "earth-normals-hs-32k.ctx"
   HazeColor [ 1 1 1 ]
   HazeDensity 0.05
   SpecularColor [ 0.5 0.5 0.55 ]
   SpecularPower 12.0
}

That all :!: :!: :!:
Edit: You must put your file in the "hires" folder where you have put your Specular Texture and Normal Map.
Motherboard: Intel D975XBX2
Processor: Intel Core2 E6700 @ 3Ghz
Ram: Corsair 2 x 1GB DDR2 PC6400
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 384 bits PCI-Express 16x
HDD: Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000 rpm
OS: Windows Vista Business 32 bits
