Officially dumb ...

Ok ... I'm officially dumb, just like some other apparant users of this forum and program who have asked a similar question. I checked the user manual and this forum but can't find a simple answer.

When I've downloaded an add-on and, as per instructions in the downloaded add-on's "readme" file, I move the whole downloaded file folder into the Celstia "Extras" folder (example being the file folder OACOMPLETE). Now ... when I open Celestia and try to find it ... it can't be located. What's the step-by-step method of opening add-ons and objects in the Celstia program? The program doesn't seem to recognize anything in the unzipped OACOMPLETE folder in "Extras" as a script file.

All beratements and castigation will be received in good faith but, I can't seem to figure this simple thing out.

You might take a look at
http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celest ... intro.html
It describes how addons should be designed.
By comparing what you downloaded, you may be able to figure out what's wrong.

As I seem to recall, the Orion's Arm addon doesn't include any scripts or HTML pages with Cel:// URLs. That may change in a future version, I suspect. In the meantime, you have to know where you want to go to see things. In other words, you have to look in the .SSC files for the names of interesting objects, or in the .STC files for the names of stars to visit. Once you've Selected a star, you can use the "solar system browser" to find out what's orbiting it.

I apologise for not including the Cel URLs with that version of the OA complete universe.
CelURLs for that add-on can be found on this page;
(scroll down)

the Cel:URLs are in bold.

Thanks ...

Do I just copy, or cut and paste, the URL's into the Extras folder?

Use your Web browser's "File /Save as..." menu to copy the Web page into a convenient folder -- the folder containing the Addon's ssc files would be one such place.

I did that, e.g for Nova Terra, and it saved it as an HTML web page file, However, I still cannot figure out how to open the *.ssc file from that link. There are no script files like "demo". I have to, as you suggested in the beginning, open the search box and type in a star name, then go there, then do a solar system search. Seems like there should be an easier method ... like a drop down menu for stars loaded within Extras. Perhaps that'll come through in a later version. For now, I'll continue exploring.

Thanks for the input.

Select the icon that was generated when you saved the Web page.

Your default Web browser will open, showing you the contents of that HTML page.

Click once on any of the CEL:// URLs in that Web page.

If you installed it properly (all three options boxes checked), Celestia will start running and, after a few seconds while it loads its databases, will take you to the viewpoint associated with that URL. If Celestia is already running, it'll take you to it immediately.
