medres, highres, lowres

Post #1by barbarossa2 » 13.02.2006, 18:47

How does Celestia choose to switch between high, med, and lores files for a planet/moon?

I am having a speed problem with my Celestia. I have downloaded the "portrait of the Sun 100+ MB file" and several 4k to 8k PNG textures for Earth. Whenever I look at my modded Moon now, and the earth or Sun pass through the background, frame rate drops significantly.

I am assuming that I need to include lowres versions of the 4 to 8 k PNGs (texture, specular, cloud, night textures) of the earth which, when viewed from 250,000 miles away, wont degrade the view. I am assuming that IF I only have one (medres) version of these Earth textures that ALL of them must be loaded in their full format if the earth passes through the picture at any discernable angular size.

Should I go ahead and make a series of 25% scale textures of my Earth PNGs and drop them into the lores folder? Do I need to call them anywhere in Solarsys data file? Or is this automatic? And at what point?

Thanks!

I LOVE this program! And this community!

P.S. How do I attach an image to be included with this post? I don't see any upload buttons in the text box for it.

Welcome!

Try reading the README files and searching the forum for your next questions!

Celestia don't choose what resolution to show, you do; try using r and Shift+r to go throw the diferents resolutions.

Nothing is automatic, you have complete full control...

Don't forget that the use of higher maps need need a high config (recent graphic board, lot of Ram...) the drop of the fps is normal when watching high level maps or hires 3D models...

Bye

:D

Thanks for the input. I will do my best to search all of my documents and posts before asking anything here again. But I thought that forums were designed for people to be able to ask questions without having to do several hours of research for them first.

I don't mind reading everything. Two or three times even. Most people who know me would agree that I am not lazy by nature. It is just that I have so many things on my palette, that I thought I would ask--instead of trial and error sinking a few dozen hours.

I really only want people who have one or two mintutes to respond to reply. Not people who are so pressed for time that my newbie posts must surely aggrivate them...

Sorry.

Would anyone mind posting links for ANY and ALL information related to file formats and Celestia internal workings here (above and beyond info provided on Celestia or Celestia Mother Lode Sites? That way I can print it all and pour through it before I ask any more questions.

Thanks!
