Benchmarking Forum or Thread

Post #1by Chuft-Captain » 31.01.2006, 13:39

Now I know I haven't got the best graphics, so I always thought the 5-15fps I usually get was to be expected, but now I wonder. Here's people getting 3000fps. I didn't think my machine was THAT bad.
Could there be something wrong with it? BTW: I went into the Open-GL settings on the graphics driver the other day and set it for quality rather than speed, and the FPS dropped to 0.6fps!!!!!!

I also did this test on my friend's PC (which is much more powerful than mine in every regard), with the same display. He got approx. 3000 fps, CPU running at 100%.

I'm really worried about my machine now. I would be only too pleased to use my CPU @ 100% if I could get the 200-3000fps figures quoted here.
Perhaps a Benchmarks Forum might be an idea, so that people could post their performance stats, so that others can compare. That way I would know if my stats were about right for my specification or if there's something wrong with my machine.
This would allow people to optimize their machine for running Celestia from others examples, or recognize when something is wrong. It would allow the developers to see what impact new releases / features are having on performance of the pool of machines out there. (I know that Chris is concerned about performance impact of new releases on older machines.)

This would have be done in a way so that as much as possible apples can be compared with apples. ie. A few commonly used models with reasonable polygon counts (eg. Space Station V) could be used with a Cel-URL to dictate a common viewpoint.

We'd have to come up with a list of the most important machine spec items common to most people out there. Probably aimed at the lower spec users out there, as those with more powerfully featured nVidia cards, etc are not going to be too concerned with perfomance anyway. There would have to be some instructions for people on how to look up the information on their machine.

People would have to include a certain amount of machine details with their perfomance reports...
I'll start the list off, but I don't know everything that affects Celestia performance, so please add to this, hopefully we can come up with a core set of items which are most critical to Celestia.

CPU (Make and speed)
RAM
Graphics Card (Make, speed, RAM)
OpenGL settings
... Convert 32bit textures to 16bit?
... Wait for vertical sync
... etc
Screen resolution
Refresh rate
Color depth

etc...

Please note that I only get 200-300 fps when I shut everything off and zoomed out as far as possible. I was attempting to maximize my framerate. The same for the 3000 fps quoted above on my friend's PC.

When I'm floating around earth or any of the other planets, I usually get a framerate of around 15-30 fps. My friend gets about 200. Like I said, his PC is far superior.

When I'm just floating in interstellar space, with the magnitude set to 7.5, I get about 30-40 fps.

When I view a detailed model, such as my Star Destroyer add-on, it drops to an average of 5 fps.

I'm at work, so I can't post all my PC's stats, but I'll name what I can off the top of my head.

CPU: Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz (mostly what's limiting my PC atm)
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9250 PCI 256 MB
Screen Resolution: 1280x1024
Refresh Rate: 60 Hz

I am running 3 moniters, w/ my 2nd moniter running off my onboard video, and my TV running off the S-Video out on my graphics card. I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes. I don't see too much of a difference in Celestia.

Just for comparison, my friend's PC's stats:
CPU: AMD Athalon 64 3200+ (something like that)
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X800 AGP 256 MB
same screen resolution and refresh rate as me

Hello CC, What system specs do you have? I have two PCs:
Benchmarks on a weak PC and a strong PC using Windows XP :

Weak PC :
The low powered Graphics Controller was an Intel 82810 Adapter with 32 Meg of RAM.
Pentium 3, 1 Ghz, 256 meg RAM

Magnitude 7.5 stars, no planet, stationary view : 17.6 FPS

Magnitude 7.5 stars, look at Earth, no clouds etc. Earth rotating viewpoint : 2.5 FPS

Add Galaxies, 15 magnitude stars, penetrating main star cluster at 400 LY per sec : 0.34 FPS

Strong PC
The NVIDIA adapter has 64 Meg RAM. It is a GeForce 4 MX . It is used on my
AMD Athelon at 2.21 G Hz with 2 Gig of RAM.

Magnitude 7.5 stars, look at Earth, no clouds etc. Earth rotating viewpoint : 60 FPS

Add Galaxies, 15 magnitude stars, penetrating main star cluster at 4000 LY per sec : 17 FPS
Your wish is my command line.
