Jestr,

Very nice mesh! have you used some displacement? What about d?©cimation? automated or by hand?

Thanks Chris,so far everythings done by hand, the far side from the big crater-Jason and the polar areas still need a lot of attention though.I'm hoping to be able to optimize it once its finished to reduce the number of polys (and file size).Cheers,Jestr

Fridger, Jestr,

I've just received your Phoebe texture and mesh from the last CVS update and I'm really, really impressed by the realism your work brings to this Saturn's moon ! The 1.4.1 version is mostly an important maintenance release, but I think Phoebe is gonna be THE big improvement !

Thank you very much ! :D

Vincent,

thanks for the flowers, but you should see the "big-size"
stuff. Jestr's "normal-size " mesh is 1.3 Mb and my normal
Phoebe texture is 4k (instead of 2k). But given Phoebe's
amazing shape Jest's mesh is really the key thing here...

Remember to adapt Phoebe's orbit parameters as in
solarsys.ssc from CVS!

And... don't forget we have a new gorgeous splash
designed by ElChristou (I even got a 800x600 king-sized
custom splash from him ;-) )

I already have a new challenge for Jerry:
Epimetheus ;-)

Isn't that shape a real charm ?

It's done, I compile from the last CVS every day.

I've been enjoying it for weeks now...

It will be, once on my Celestia screen...

Thanks again.

Jestr, Fridger

I know this is wishing a bit much and you would like to see Epimetheus, but I would like to see the equatorial ridge on Iapetus and large crater on Mimas in 3D with your new textures.... Perhaps I will play with that one.

buggs,

I previously (<1.4.1) had added a bumpmap (and a
specmap) to my Iapetus texture in the distribution which
did exactly that! In the developers list we then decided
that we shall not use fake bumpmaps anymore. So
I exchanged the fake bumpmap of the moon against my
new topography map, deleted the horrible Mercury
bumpmap AND deleted my fake Iapetus bumpmap...

It is however a very easy matter to devise a usable fake
bump map as an add-on that beautifully enhances Iapetus'
equatorial ridge in 3d and also lets the northern white
glaciers flow over smooth bumps as the photos show...The
design goal of the /official/ Celestia distribution, however,
is to display FACTS as much as possible...

Bye Fridger

Thanks for all the encouragement guys, sure I would love to have a go at making a better mesh for Epimetheus, and a few other of Saturns small moons.I have already done a version of Mimas,Buggs but I havent checked yet how it matches up with the new Ciclops map.Fridger if you can make a good texture for Epimetheus, then I can do the mesh for you.The same goes for any of these small irregular moons. What about this one,Hyperion

looks like quite a challenge.Iapetus might be fun to do (especially the ridge),but with the bigger more spherical moons there isnt a lot to be gained by having a mesh.A good bump map,or normal map can be just as good from afar.I havent finished the Phobe mesh yet either,it still needs a good bit of work at the poles, but what I have done so far matches around the big crater,Jason and most of the other named craters. When it is done I will make the bigger version available on the Motherlode, cheers,Jestr

Hi Jerry,

yes, Hyperion is great, but it would keep you busy "drilling holes" into the mesh almost for ever ;-) . Since we all want to profit from your talent ... Epimetheus is probably the safer start ;-)

Cheers,

Jestr, the phoebe model actually in cvs has some poly artefact; I have edited the 3DS with a smooth angle of 80 and the model stay perfect.
As I cannot convert in cmod (cmodtool on osX has some issues) can you correct this and create a new cmod to commit in cvs?

I don??t know what happened, but I put the "phoebe.cmod" in Celestia 1.4.0>models,changed the solarsys entry and Phoebe DISAPPEARED.So,I renamed the mesh to "roughsphere.cms" and now it works.Do you have any idea what happened?
