So...the only solution is to have kind of a label reset key built in. With a klick, ALL labels then show up and...

I don't know why I get such a pleasure out of it... honestly, when I run through my little routine... it blows ME away everytime. Especially when I remind myself - the catalog only has 10,000 galaxies!!! (but you already know this)

Is the label reset key something I can tweak in the cfg file? Or is there a parameter I can tweak in the code to do that? Or maybe even a tweak to lift the upper limit off the magnitude controls?

Thanks

Well the simplest approach would be to make my zoom-dependent label display optional. So you could activate or deactivate it on demand via some key shortcut (analogous to the AutoMag) . But really there should be a wider interest for such a feature, before it would be worth implementing it.

My fixes for displaying VERY far away galaxies (NGC 1007,...IC 4107) from my deepsky.dsc catalog have now been committed to CVS.

Affected files: render.cpp, dsodb.cpp

I agree. So... to those nameless thousands following this thread... anyone else interested in the OPTION to have all the galaxy labels displayed at once - filling up your screen with potentially annoying overlapping labels... yet also showing, in all its glory, the magnitude of our galactic population?

(or maybe this question is too buried in this thread?)

Yes friends, be CONSCIENTIOUS about vasting more key shortcuts ;-) . Our "key jungle" can only get worse...

Yes, I agree. This option could be usefull.

No, this is an horror. E was used for the galaxies, so why not option-E or something like this, with the E.

Fridger,

I just downloaded and built a fresh copy of CVS and I can't see these galaxies NGC 1007, IC 4107, IC 4147, or IC 4167. I had the light gain at 100% and faintest visible at 15.15. That's as high as it goes on my system. Is there a way to get fainter? I tried to make it 20.0 in celestia.cfg. Is there something else I'm missing? Galaxies and Nebulae are on. Hit the G key twice.

Earth with OpenGL 2.0 using ATi card problem seemed to be solved...
But I found white oceans bug still exists in pre10:
while eclipse is happen in somewhere on the Earth and eclipse shadows are enabled.

using Radeon 9600pro with version 2.0.5523 WinXP Release

Steve:

The good news is that it appears you do not need a special new code from Fridger to get your sky filled with galaxy labels, even though they are overlapping. As proof:

Image

Click on image for the big picture.

I am using Fridger's new 1.4.0pre9-f Windows exe file, the one he released Sunday. I am just outside of the Milky Way looking far off into space toward the virgo cluster. I got all these labels to light by setting FOV to 37, turning off AutoMag and boosting the magnitude to 15 with the ] key. There are hundeds of galaxies in every direction labeled. It should satisfy anyone who wants to get a sense of just how many there are. As you move toward the virgo cluster (try centering on M 87), even more labels appear. Changing FOV also boosts or lowers label count.

Surprisingly, the same effect is not apparent in Chris's new 1.4.0pre10. His version of the app displays a lot less labels with the same settings and prevents overlap.

Regards,

Frank

Just a short reminder to folks fixing 1.4.0pre9/10 that nebula labels are still not activated in the Windows version of the app. :?

Cartrite,

you might have been too early, since I only committed the fix 7h's ago to CVS and there is a substantial delay wrto the public CVS server. You should be able to see a recent commit date by myself in render.cpp and dsodb.cpp.

[Chris erroneously assumed I had committed the code already to CVS.]

Otherwise, I recommend to push CTRL+K (marker) first, so you see where to go. Then center NGC 1007,say. When zooming in at the centered marker position, the NGC 1007 label should appear first. Switch off Automag for a start, perhaps (CTRL+y).

Frank,

Chris' assumed erroneously that my galaxy modifications (celestia-1.4.0pre9-F.exe) were already committed to CVS when releasing 1.4.pre10. They were NOT.

Now my code is in CVS since ~ 7hs.

A new (1.4.0 final) release will come very soon...

Yup. That was it. I just did an update this morning. All galaxies present and accounted for. Thanks Fridger. :D

Just built the latest CVS.
Now very distant galaxies are all there :D
Very impressive when all labels are on!
I have got a /very/ fast machine but all labels on make it crawl lol

Hey Boux,

good to hear ;-) . I did some further coding already in the context of galaxy display, but for now, we have a definite CVS coding stop (except bug fixing) until 1.4.0 final is out.

CVS is nice, but if by chance you need some alpha/beta Linux code testers, I am your man

Hi,

I just tested 1.4.0pre10 on my Radeon 9600+ machine: everything is runnig well, no problem with opengl2.0, even on earth when an eclipse is happening.

Congratulations!! :D

Nothing seems now to prevent releasing the final 1.4.0!

It would be finer yet if the focus anomaly with the set time box could be fixed, but even then, this will be the most fascinating Celestia release ever!

Bye,
Brokfn
