I to have a nvida card and xp

your prob is that auto update installed (MICROSOFT'S nivida DRIVER)
the driver from microsoft IS OPEN GL DISABLED

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use a driver from microsoft
ALWAYS go to nivida's site and re install there driver , after COMPLEATLY removing ms's
you will nead to reboot in safe mode to do this because if you dont then xp will reinstall ms's all on it's own !!!

I think you may have misunderstood me John,
All the drivers I mentioned in this thread are from Nvidia's site.
I ran some tests to see what was going on. In the process of testing I updated my driver
from 78.01 to 81.85 provided from Nvidias Site.
The latest driver, 81.85, gives "my" sytem a problem. The open GL 2.0 rendering mode does not work corretly. As outlined in this thread. Some think that Microsoft's update KB896424 causes a similar (or same) problem on thier systems. I'm not sure what is going on, but for me at least, KB896424 update is not causing any problems for me. It's the driver 81.85.

i guess i did i am used to seeing driver probs. because of auto-update. I am on fedora linux know
is your card an older one like mine (Geforce-mx400)
or a new one

I use a Geforce FX 5500. Not sure when it came out but I got it last April. The computer I use is old though. I got the card to improve all this eye candy with Celestia. It was about the best my system could handle. At first I tried the same model but for the AGP port. I tried everything but could not get it to work. So I settled for PCI model. I use Suse 9.3 and 9.2.
Like them better than Windows. I'm on 9.3 now.

I didn??t have any display problem,but Celestia is running much more slowly now.Even in 800X600 and the AA and AF is off,I notice drop in the frame rate,even when I look to Jupiter.I notice a major drop in frame rate when the nebulas are rendered.Before installing the patch,I didn??t see any drop in frame rate even with 800X600,4xAA and 8XAF and with nebulas toggled.Should I have to reinstall the program?
I am using driver 78.01 in a Geforce 6600 GT.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) warned users on Tuesday of a new "critical"-rated flaw in recent versions of Windows that could allow attackers to take control of a system by embedding malicious software code into digital images.

Users of Windows XP, Windows Server and an updated version of Windows 2000 were vulnerable to an attack unless they installed a software patch.

The flaw affects imaging technology used in Windows that could potentially allow an attacker to take control of a system simply by having the user view a digital image that contains software code that exploits the flaw.

The top two providers of security software and services, Symantec Corp. (SYMC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and McAfee Inc. (MFE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) recommended that users install the patch and avoid opening suspicious e-mail attachments or clicking on any unfamiliar links.

"If a potential victim goes to a Web site and sees these files, they can be infected," said Monti Ijzerman, manager of security content at McAfee.

"The most the obvious thing is to deploy (install) the Microsoft security patches," Izjerman said.

Microsoft issued the patches as part of its monthly security bulletin, which it adopted in 2003 to make it easier for users and computer system administrators to install patches and keep track of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's software.

Users can also download the patches to fix the software flaws at www.microsoft.com/security.


I think it is a problem with image if I have understood.
