Can I do this with celestia, if so how?

I'd like to see if the moon was visible on certain dates from a city in new york. I understand that sometimes you can not see the moon, because of whatever reasons, weather, etc.. is this possible with celestia?

You can for the dates. Just hover over New York, hit y to sync your orbit, ctrl-g to land, hit enter, type moon, enter, and t to track. Now go to Time, set time, enter the date and time and presto. The weather on certain dates will not be the same however...

Do you know the latitude and longitude of the city you're looking for? If so, go to the Navigation menu/Goto Object. In the box that pops up, enter the lat and lon of the city, make sure the object is Earth and put a distance of say 10000 km for the distance. Then do what Buggs said.

Be careful with the longitude though, I think any longitudes measured in terms of degrees W rather than degrees E need to be entered as negative.

No I don't know the coordinates, can't find them, the city in new york is

coram, new york

Enter "coram" as the feature name, and the state as New York. You'll see the lat/lon in the next window.

It seems Coram is at 40?° 52' 07" N and 73?° 0' 5" W?

If you go here:
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html

You can convert those to decimal degrees that Celestia likes in its Goto Object box. Since it's shown in W coordinates, you'll have to add a - sign before the decimal longitude there.

you can download a locations file for the entire Earth and forget about trying
to figure out the latitude/longitude. :lol:

You'll be able to type "New York" to
get to New York.

That's a pretty useful file but I'm not sure it would have the place he wants (it's worth checking though).

I don't think he wants New York City itself, he wants a small town outside it? The point is though that there are plenty of sites on the net where you can find the lat/lon of any town/city/village/hamlet/collection of shacks that you want and not just in the US

(I find that going to weather.ca, typing in a city, and clicking the 'statistics' button in the sidebar will give the location of cities and towns in Canada for example).

Yeah, no problem...

I just thought I'd make sure that people do know that there are location
files available. My town of Germantown, OH can be found in one of the larger
location files, and it's only got 5000 people.

My locations file was available from the Motherlode until Sep 10 2005, when I requested all links to my files to be deleted from ML for reasons not important here. My 41000+ locations were VERY popular indeed for years.

As I discovered now: One day later, Sep 11 2005, Harald (Schmidt) submitted under his name without any reference to my previous work new large size locations files to ML, including importance weights, but without any comments how they were generated...

Well, this is a free world...

It seems that Coram is in both the "31000 big ones" and the "96000 small ones" SSCs on the motherlode, but the long/lat listed for it in the 'small ones' file is -114.05 48.42, and listed as -73.00 40.87 in the 'big ones' file.

I guess they're showing different cities with the same name?

Actually that name comes from pre-medieval German and has a nice meaning:
