I think there should be different Celestia download options tailored to people's PC specs. For example people with a low end system could download a version of celestia with lower res textures and fewer stars, people with higher end PCs have the option to download higher res textures with more stars and stuff.
I would like this cause i am tired of trying to get ALL the best mods and to get them to work for my PC. I have a 4 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, Geforce 6800 Ultra, with 300 GB free disk space, and broadband connection.
Please consider.

That's a HUUUUUUGE amount of work if you think about it.
How many textures have you done in your life? I did more than plenty . Such a venture has to be extremely well coordinated and all the Copyrights to be taken care of....
Ever counted how many textures Celestia uses?
It is certainly long overdue to release a high-quality texture package one day. But meanwhile there are so many options (VT tiles for example) and there are so many new textures coming in e.g. from Space missions!
We could never keep up with all this.

A 4 GHz CPU doesn??t exist.The highest clock is 3.6 GHz,Your Millionaire!

Sorry to interject here, but there already are a huge number of
add-ons, textures, star databases, asteroid models, etc, tailored to do
prcisely what you ask. All you have to do is look for them. If you'll notice,
I'm running an extremely low-end PC by today's standards, and I've been
able to download and use almost any add-on you can think of on this
poor machine. Sometimes, I might have to re-size a texture or similar
modifications, but this is - to use Dr. Schrempp's words - "Utterly trivial."
Besides, it's also half of the fun learning how to make things work correctly.
Take care.

"cause i am tired of trying to get ALL the best mods and to get them to work for my PC." I simply dont have the time or motivation to find get all the best mods for my PC.

I meant Athlon 64 4000.

But someone else must surely have the time AND motivation to to do it for you... Don??t you think?

Of course it would be nice to be able to choose between various configurations of Celestia.
The difficulty is to determinate exactly the power limits of each PC (or MAC) configuration to suggest "that you can load , that you can't load" etc..
That is the mistake I did when I made my first VT. Some tiles where 4k! too much for some (old) graphics cards.
However I dont understand your probleme ?
What about those with a 486 CPU at 400 Mhz a Cirrus Logis 5426, 128 Mb and a modem at 56kb ?

Good you wrote it. I certainly THOUGHT it, but when I write it, it usually sounds less friendly

Yes, indeed, a very useful "device": you can cook all your meals on it

but there is always a possibility of overcolcking, earlier peoples used to buy 1.6 ghz and overclocked it to 2.4 ghz, so may be 3.8 can be overclocked to much more
but coming back to the main topic, the current format is good, celestia as a program only requires that 10MB stuffs, its enough for peoples to study and explore the universe,
And for peoples with so much good graphic card, the stuffs on http://www.celestiamotherlode.net is enough to stop those graphics cards hunger for number crunching
