Most likely stars for terranstyle planets?

Post #1by Guckytos » 28.09.2005, 09:04

Hi everyone,

just a "simple" question.
What are the most likely stars to have terranstyle planets orbiting around them?
As our sun is a G2V, the G-type seems to ge good, at least in the main sequence.
What others are most likely?
F- and K-type stars of the main sequence?

Answers are very welcome.

Regards,

Guckytos

You have it pretty well covered, there ; perhaps a few of the larger and more stable (i.e flare free) red dwarfs of class M would also be suitable candidates. There are some red dwarfs in the Tarter and Turnbull HabCat, for example.

What do you mean by an Earth-type planet? The Earth itself has only had an oxygen rich atmosphere for about half a billion years or so; for most of its existence, it has had life, but that life had not yet produced enough oxygen to make an atmosphere breathable by humans.
Would a lifebearing Precambrian world with no Oxygen be Earth-like?

Some Earth-like worlds orbiting F dwarfs might be heated prematurely so that they develop moist greenhouse conditions almost as soon as they develop life; perhaps life might adapt somehow. Even our own world will become too hot for our kind of biosphere in a billion years or so. The variations on the Earthlike theme are probably many in number; I recommend looking at John Dollan's speculative -Planetary Classification List for an idea of how variable such worlds might be.

Man I really need to get that Classification List finished....

At any rate, another place to look for some good, potentially Earth-style habitable stars is the list at Solstation.com, where the appropriate stars have an asterisk (*) next to them. But this only addresses the prospective late F through early K stars, although various parameters such as age or the presence of exoplanets are taken into account.

Speaking of lists, i was inspired by Dollan's planetary classification list to create my own, but my hard drive malfunctioned and i lost it, so I needed a new hard drive.

My new hard drive is working great. :)

But i now have to do it all over again!

Heh, I just got a new hard drive myself. But I keep my important files on a pin drive (which, I know, only increases the risk of me losing that somewhere between home and work).

At any rate, I've been fddling with the PCL tonight, refining a couple of entries, although I haven't been able to upload it to the web page yet. One major thing that I will need to do, I think, is go through the worlds of our own Solar System and classify THEM... that should serve as the basis for a fairly detailed classification scheme. And then I can continue to add to it as new ideas are put forth.

Then I can make default textures and models for all of the different types!

Thanks for the answers, guys.

What i meant with Earth-like was: habitable, with breathable atmosphere for humanoid lifeforms, oxygen-breathing.

I downloaded the planet-classifiacation list.
