Yup, I forgot that I installed them manualy. I ran make distclean to a fresh source, added, $(wildcard *.pts) to the line ( pkgdata_DATA = ) in the Makefile.am file in models directory, Then ran make -f Makefile.common (admin dir) make -f Makefile.cvs ./configure ....., compiled it, installed it and everything was installed. I included the step by step in case anyone else out there wants to try it.

Hi Fridger,
I managed to get the nebulaes working in ft1 and this is what I found out.
When I edited the celestia.rc file in res (resource.h file too) I used WordPad. I should have used emacs. WordPad leaves a lot of ^M chars at the end of every line which produced strange results. I used emacs and it worked fine, that is it saved the file without adding all them ^M chars.
Anyhow, I just got it working. The first thing I noticed was that a line (AbsMag) from the deepsky.dsc file has to be added to the dsc file in the addon folder to get it to work properly.
Another thing is I noticed that the m16 nebulae tend to dissapear when using the mouse right click to orbit around. Didn't try any others yet.
And I think this happens in the other celestia versions too, but the stars tend to dissapear when using the "g" key.
Anyhow I thought that You might find this interesting.

Cartrite,
don't worry, we meanwhile got everything working fine, even in case there is no AbsMag entry in the galaxy add-on. This would be bad for compatibility reasons if all add-ons had to add now an AbsMag...
I am just very busy professionally until next week, whence the FT1.1 version is not yet out. There are lots of checks to be done for Linux and Windows independently and all that takes plenty of time...
But Toti and I are in intense communication and working as hard on that stuff as time allows...
Bye Fridger
Cartrite,
You can try Imageshack (http://imageshack.us/index.php). I use it a lot (don't have a website either)

Just to add to that:
Most of any experience I have with computers goes back to the day my country fired the farmer and hired the actor as president. Then after the communications industry meltdown a few years ago I went back to school for a CCNA. I kinda touched on visual studio at that time. While in school someone turned me on to linux and with linux, if you want to install something you basicly have to build it first. So I built a lot of source code.
But never with Windows.
Anyhow, please forgive me if I sound like I'm stating ovious. This is all new to me. Its been about 20 years scince I looked this hard at any program.

GREAT NEWS - CTRL+V CRASH PROBLEM SOLVED
Hi everyone:
I have great news. The Ctrl + V crash problem that lots of us are experiencing when testing out either the latest cvs build or Fridger & Toti's new 1.4.0 FT 1 version, is not due to some bug in the code. It turns out it is due to a missing or altered file in the Windows Celestia folder. It has been FIXED!!!
I have been emailing Chris about the problem, and about my desperate need to have access to what will become 1.4.0 pre7 (with all the new bells and whistles). I want to include 1.4.0 pre7 on the CD that I will be providing to schools around the country real shortly now.
Chris was kind enough to reply and advise me that he was not able to duplicate the Ctrl + V crash problem on his system. Earlier in this thread, Fridger and Toti also were not able to duplicate it on their Windows systems.
Chris provided me the latest CVS build, to include not only the application, but all of the files that go into the Celestia folder. The only thing he left out (inadvertently) was the seven galaxy .pts files that are needed to see spiral galaxies.
Also note that this build is the latest CVS version of Celestia, but does not incorporate Fridger and Toti's new FT1 application.
Here is the link to the complete Windows build (minus celestia-Ft1.exe and the 7 pts files):
http://www.shatters.net/~claurel/celestia-win32-conf.exe
To my great surprise, when I installed this build in a new Celestia folder and opened Celestia, there was absolutely NO crashes, using Ctrl + V, or going to Earth ... or anything. I could not duplicate it. When I dropped Fridger and Toti's new celestia-FT1.exe application into the folder and placed their seven galaxy .pts files in the "models" folder, Celestia ran like a dream. NO CRASHES!!!!!! Of course, we could not see the Milky Way or access nebula add-ons in the extras folder, but Fridger and Toti already know about that.
There is obviously some associated data file or dll or shader file or other file in the new cvs build that is missing or different in 1.4.0 pre6. Without the new file, the program will crash. Sure enough, when I took the application.exe that came with Chris's Windows build and placed it in the 1.4.0pre 6 folder, I got the crash every time.
That is why Fridger and Toti and Chris cannot duplicate the problem. They have the updated file in their Celestia folder and the rest of us do not. I don't know which file it is, but ...
That problem is now solved. Download the complete Windows build from the above link. Copy celestia-FT1.exe into it. Copy the seven galaxy.pts files into the Models folder. Run the program. You're SET
I suggested to Chris that he announce this simple solution to the problem himself here on the forum, but I guess he has not found the time ...
The new code had four problems.
1) The crash problem - solved.
2) The absence of the MIlky Way from inside the galaxy - solved in the FT 1.1 new release promised by Fridger and Toti any time now.
3) The inability to access nebula add-on in the Extras folders (or any other extras folder named in the cfg file) - solved in the FT1.1 new release promised.
4) The need for two new keystroke entries to toggle nebula labels and OpenCluster labels - solved by an addition of a few lines to the cvs build by Brendan (simply needs to be copied into 1.4.0 FT1.1)
Personally, I have found two minor problems, easily fixed by a few lines of code. For example, right now, both the cvs build and FT1 do not retain the nebula toggle upon exit. That is a pain. Every time you launch Celestia, you cannot see nebula until you toggle them on with the [ ^ ] key. The program needs to set nebula on by default, or have a new line in the cfg file or start.cel turning them on at launch. Secondly, it would be nice to be able to control the brightness of galaxies via the cfg file or via a new menu option (set galaxybrightness ___ ), with zero being no brightness and perhaps 5 being maximum brightness. These settings should be retained upon exit, just like star magnitudes are now.
Anyway, Fridger and Toti - PLEASE - I know it is time consuming ... but if you can PLEASE release FT1.1 as soon as possible (perhaps this weekend ....), everyone on the forum, myself and thousands of high school students will be very grateful.
Thanks in advance
Frank

Frank,
all I can say is that we have fixed ALL reported little problems in our new FT1.1 version and MORE, like the galaxy labels work again and we also print out the Hubble types for each galaxy. There is no point releasing FT1.1 before all required tests for Linux and Windows are carefully done, which is time consuming and requires high concentration.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you the actual release time, since I am extremely busy until end of next week. In addition, Toti and I lost quite some time with confusion related to "tabs and spaces" in our mutual patches....
When I get home after 9pm I am just too tired for anything (except drinking beer )...
It is certainly encouraging to read about your progress concerning the CTRL-V bug that I never could reproduce! What does not fit well to your report is that Selden has the CTRL-V bug despite building from the latest CVS code...But he might still have forgotten to install a file.
Did anyone reproduce that bug under Linux? If so, could we have an strace output from that person??? Perhaps there is an analogous tool in Windows?
strace or similar could point us to the lacking file....
Bye Fridger

Fridger,
I suspect everyone will be glad to know that the Ctrl-V crash went away after I downloaded completely fresh copies of all of the files in the CVS repository.
I had been depending on the CVS client correctly updating changed files. Apparently this doesn't always work the way it should.

Selden,
what a joy! So it seems now the point is to prepare such an archive for people to download and use together with our forthcoming FT1.1 version.

Excellent! I had already reported on this on Sept. 13th:
abramson wrote:... I just succeeded in building the last CVS (I just commented out the dts_ keywords that my compiler somehow can't handle). I then copied FT1 and the rest of Fridger's files and run it. Good news 1: I recovered the vertex/combiners path. Good news 2: the Ctrl-V crash when selecting FX path has disappeared.
Anyway, I'm happy this was not a serious bug. I have been also very busy at work these days, to do some more profitable testing...
(By the way, I also solved the DTS keywords problem I had for compiling under Windows. I don't know if someone else has had it.)

BTW Seriously speaking, what about the new release of FT Celestia version?
Thanks a lot!

FT1.1 is practically ready (with all reported buggies fixed), except for some last cross checks between Windows and Linux. But unfortunately, until the end of the coming week I have practically ZERO spare time. I don't want to overlook stupid bugs just because we now release in too much of a rush.

I think it's time for us, people who understand french language, to ask all of you, people who don't understand french, THE question :
Is it Ok with you if symaski62 writes ALL his messages in french ?
If you agree, and if symaski62's french is clear enough ( ), we'll translate his messages into english for you...
If you don't agree, this forum will keep a bit of its exoticism and mystery, which wouldn't be a bad thing...
