Good Doctor,

How about a screen shot so's we can "Ooh" and "Aah" for a while?

I choose the second option...

OK, Bob, ;-)

here is the famous Whirlpool galaxy M51 (together with its "head" galaxy NGC 5195 and 2 dim galaxies IC4277, IC4278) . What is remarkable is that the composition and rendering was completely automatic :

Note, the distance is ~9 Mpc and the appMag 8.9 as you can read off:

Now let's move in with our virtual spaceship towards the M51 system! Here is another glowing view much closer and brighter now, only around 0.5 Mpc away with an appMag of 2.8!

Enjoy,

Bye Fridger

Wow. If this doesn't get Chris' attention, I don't know what will.

Good Doctor...

"Ooh's" and "Aah's" aren't really adequate here. I'm with Hank...

"WOW!"

I'm ready to go buy a new PC now just so I can see this kind of detail.
"Wow" again...

Thank you sir. Superb!

That is, well, very impressive! On the non-graphics side, I see that multiple names for galaxies has apparently been implemented, which is a much-needed feature I think.

If this work doesn't find its way into the official build, it would be a major disappointment.

Superb work!

Excellent!

What other changes will be in the new version (eg interface changes)? Or is it just galaxies that have been updated?

As one of those listed as the 'oldest' Forum Guys, I wondered what I could add. Now I have two things:

1. Fridger's and Toti's galaxies: Ooooh! Aaaah! That really does look very good.

2. Oddly enough, I was sorting a box of old print outs today, and I found one from 08 Jun 2001 of the 'Blazeboard' that used to be at ennui.shatters.net. This was the predecessor to the phpBB now in use for Celestia. Apart from Chris as 'admin' and 'chris', there were just 11 other posters. Topics of the week had been: badly drawn text fonts on Matrox graphics cards, the fact that the 1024?—2048 texture for Earth was too big for many graphics cards, the release and request for feedback on Celestia 1.1.0 from Chris, and the 'dim planet' problem (probably that Lambertian scattering often used by graphics isn't accurate of planets, and causes the terminator to be quite dull).

Spiff.
