Hey Everyone,
I know some of you have been wondering about what ever happened to the Earth Mark I and Orpheus textures for Franks Celestia Educational Projects.
Being that I just can't seem t find the earlier version I posted pictures of, I decided to work on an alternative version I had. I never posted pictures of this version. But in the end I think it is a better choice for the project. Here are a few pictures of the texture loaded in Celestia.

For those of you that don't what this is about or what Orpheus was here is a quick explanation.

Some 4 billion years ago it is now believed that the moon was created from the collision of a rogue planetary body that was about the size of Mars. This rogue planet has been given the name of Orpheus. Now this rogue planet didn?€™t hit the first version of Earth which is considered Earth Mark I head on but instead side glanced it. This first collision sent a large mass of material into Earth Mark I?€™s orbit. But Orpheus now being captured by Earth?€™s gravity was pulled back for yet another glancing blow. This blow merged most of what was left of Orpheus with the Earth and more material was sent into orbit. Most of this material fell back to the New Earth fairly quickly. But some of it stayed in orbit and gradually started to gravitate together and form the embryonic moon. Once all the material was swept up we were left with a single moon one quarter the size of the Earth. It is also believed that if this collision would not have happened that the planet we know as Earth would have been a very different place. We and most forms of life might not even be here. With out the Moons stabilizing effects on the Earth orbit life would have had a much more difficult time getting started. It would have also had to deal with the Earth tumbling over itself as it orbits the sun. So this early tragedy and the destruction of the first version of Earth and the loss of Orpheus was really a good thing. There is also evidence that not only the Earth was hit by very large rogue bodies early on in the solar system. Venus also shows signs of a catastrophic collision that flipped it over on its north pole. There is evidence that Mercury is missing most of its crust and outer mantle. And finally there is Uranus, which seems to have had an encounter with an Earth size body early on in its life. The result was it being flipped onto its side. Of course some of this is pure speculation but there is strong evidence if you want to look for it.

I'm VERY interested in this addon! Please, publish it, NOW ! ;-)

Actually, about venus sense of rotation, I strongly suspect it has nothing to do with some past collision. It's a kind of "resonance" with the Earth !

Did you know that Venus is always showing us the same face (to the Earth observer) ? This is a long range, long time period, gravitational effect.

Well I just finished Earth Mark I for Frank. I have to post these pictures fast as my internet connection is do to go down tonight for a short time. So here are 2 pictures of the new version of the texture.

Frank felt, and I agreed with him that there needed to be more water on the surface. If given permision to release to everyone I will post a lnk to the textures. It isn't an add-on so there is no SSC file. There are only raw PNG texrtures that can be aplied to any planet of your choosing. Included in the pack is the surface textute, specmap, Normalmap, Nightside Map, and Cloudmap.

This bring this little project to a close so I can get back to finisheing off the bigger ones.

I think the oceans should be a bit redish. To me, they don't feel "natural" in grays.

Well originaly as you can see the water was brown. But because we know that the atmosphere would scatter blue light and that water has a tendency to look blueish with these effects I went with a more gray color that gets enhanced by my default atmosphere settings. It will of course look different on most peoples Celestia installs as they do not use my Earth settings. Another reason is that for an educational activity it just made more sense to make the water look a little more like water I guess. If Frack doesn't want the water gray I can alway reaply the other water color mask. Its his call as it is his texture. One last thing of course, the water wouldn't be red because there is no life on the planet yet. This is Earth before the Orpheus collision. WE have no proof of anything about the Earth at this time. Making the water red to sugest life in the form of bacteria would be a long stretch to say the least.

The new Educational Activity, named "The Primitive Earth and Moon", is being written. Beside Don's wonderful textures, Jestr is doing a lot of add-on work to create an actual animation of the collision, and to place a huge ring of debris in orbit around the merged planet/blob. He hopes to finish soon. because this is an educational activity that will have to run on a typical school computer, we are striving to keep the demands on the computer low, so there is a lot of fine-tuning occurring.

Stay tuned. I'll announce the release of the Activity in about two weeks.

:) Obviously, I cannot thank Don enough for this great work. Orpheus and Earth Mark 1 really look REAL!!!!

Animation within the program? Will you be using start and end dates?

Hi Buggs,yes lots of Beginning and Ending dates.I'm not sure I can keep this addon small,but I have split the effects up into separate folders so it will make it easier to choose the ones that work on your computer.Here's a screenshot of Earth just after impact with Orpheus (which has shattered) and a nascent moon is to be seen on the right of frame.

:oops: I am sorry about the delay. I had been holding out for Fridger's code but that was not to be.

:) The good news is that I have just uploaded Activity 9, the Primitive Earth and Moon to the Motherlode, along with all my other revised Activities. Give Joe Bolte a bit of time to update the education page (major changes there). I will formally announce the availability of the Activity hopefully in the next few days.
