i run celestia on my 19" TFT BenQ FP937s+ at 1280x1024 and it's wonderful, no flickering effects, black stays black in every corner of the screen and no color distortions at all

Your NVIDIA driver appears to be quite ancient! Now we have the actual number 76.76 depending a bit on the OS!!

Also that noted brown-red corner in your screen is not Celestia's fault, but rather indicates a low-quality TFT.

I have a Samsung TFT at home and in my office with Celestia working without any disturbances whatsoever.
