Celestia Close-ups?

Post #1by consecretus » 13.08.2005, 17:52

Hello you folks!

I love the universe- that's why Celestia is my favourite programme- but I like the earth best. So I just downloaded some Close-ups and in the install guide the author writes that one should search the BlueMarble DDS-folder and put these add-ons in this folder. In another guide tthey want me to put half of the add-ons into the earth- and the rest into the earth_spec-folder. Well, I don't have any of this folders and I tried almost everything- I created these folders and put it into the textures folder e.g.- but nothing worked:(. Is anybody able to help :?:

To use the most of the close-ups textures, you need first to install a base for these DDS VT.
For example, you will found "Blue Marble DDS 32k" from Walton Comer at this address :

But, if you prefer Earth more than stars and galaxies and if you have a speedy link to the net, try :
http://earth.google.com/

You can also try Worlwind

(Seems to me that i is possible to export WW tiles into Celestia... some Orbiter (french) fans have also translated some of these tiles into Orbiter, IIRC)

Yes we can, but alas the result is not the same.
Did you see the raised aeras displayed witch "Earthgoogle" in 3DS ?
Fly "around" the mountains and not only "over" is great.

I tried to install google earth but the programme always crashes down when I am loading, although I've got a fast computer and LAN:(.
I also pondered about WorldWind but the install application is very big (more than 90 MB!!), so I think Celestia's the best solution and I like it to have earth and the rest of the universe in one programme:wink:.
Thanks for your help :).
P.S.:Has anyone some close-ups of Berlin? And are there close-ups of Santorin/Greece??

Just to add something:

I already have downloaded the 32K Earth Surface Map (VT/PNG) with 21 Megabytes and the CTX-file. Will that work? :?

Hi Consecretus,

To help you we need to know what you are using :
Computer type (ie PC or MAC)
OS type and version (ie XP or linux)
Graphic card type
Celestia version (1.3.2 or 1.4.0pre6)
....
I already have downloaded the 32K Earth Surface Map (VT/PNG) with 21 Megabytes and the CTX-file. Will that work?

That seems like the Level 3 from John Van Vliet.
It's not enough. You need a complete pack of textures from Level 0 to Level 5.
Sorry, but the BlueMarble pack is 92 Mbytes and the others packs are bigger.

Sorry for Berlin and Santorin Celestia close-ups.
I think they do not exist ?
But at this address you will find two very larges images of the "Citta Vaticana" (images 10 and 11 or more...)

Thank you for your help! Sorry, I'm a little bit stupid when someone is speaking about Virtual Textures. That's why I had to ask once again. Thanks for not being impatiently  Oh, and also thanks for that cool link, these images are awesome! Well, I think anyone should create some close-ups of Berlin :? Well, but there is no problem anymore with these Virtual Textures because 90 MB, that's a huge amount of data; I don't want to download that much because I am already very addicted to the internet and a download-maniac!! :D
