10th Planet

Post #1by adamnieman » 30.07.2005, 12:20

You've probably heard about the latest discovery by Mike Brown's team at Caltech.

If not, check it out:
JPL's press release: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/media/072905/
Discoverer's Web site: http://www.gps.caltech.edu/~mbrown/
New Scientist article: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7763

Here is some code to add to your 'extras' folder. Copy the code and paste it at the end of your 'outersys.ssc' file or create a new file and give it any name you like (as long as it has an ssc file extension).

... or get the full updated outersys.ssc

Grant Hutchison has already added all the new planetoids to outersys.ssc

See his post here:
http://shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7726

Or go directly to the file here:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/celestia/celestia/data/outersys.ssc

Unlike Grant, I decided to call 2003 UB313 a 'planet' rather than an 'asteroid'. (As far as I'm concerned, the difference between planets and asteroids is arbitrary and arbitrarily we can call everything Pluto-sized or larger a 'planet'.)

I have created a texture for the new planet. It is now available for download at the Celestia motherload. For more information, visit my topic about it in the addons forum. Later!
