danielj and t00fri have opposite philosophies. The former wishes to be helped, and the latter wishes people would help themselves.
Excellently phrased Spiff
I'm with danielj, he should go on asking whatever he choses and ignore t00fri (difficult I know !) It is a sad thing if a person cannot ask a question in a forum like this for fear of upsetting someone like t00fri.
If Herr Doktor doesn't like the form of the question he should learn to ignore it and leave it to others to respond,.or to the moderator(s) if any questions oversep any boundaries.
In fact I would go so far as to suggest that the way t00fri responds to danielj (and others) is itself a matter for the moderator(s).
I don't understand why you have to offend Fridger in that unfair manner even while he is absent.
He spends so much time working for the Celestia community and is always willing to help everyone. And: Nobody is perfect. We all should show more respect.
I think that some people here are a bit too impatient for my taste (and much more impatient than Fridger when answering certain posts) when they ask for (or demand?) help. I think the only thing Fridger expects is some readiness to learn. And (imho) he doesn't like the attitude of some people who (want to) let others do their work for them.
I hope that there won't be more conflicts with Fridger in the future, as you know: It takes two to tango. Everybody who offends someone else (like in this case) should first take a look at himself.
Andy.

Well, I have to clarify that I am more inclined to agree with the self-sufficiency philosophy of Fridger. You would have seen that in the Fridger-EDG wars^H^H^H^H discussion recently. But, I didn't want EDG to go.
Some of danielj's requests (for example, for immediate Phoebe shape models, now! Please!) do seem ill-considered, but I'm usually amused by danielj's requests. Although I consider this to be way too much like 'I want room service!', I chuckle and move on. It's what Netiquette ( http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1855.html ) would recommend (hmmm, did I post that link before???).
Another chuckle is when Fridger spends more time explaining to a n00b why he won't answer any question belonging to the Journal of Obvious Questions, than answering the question. However, Netiquette does point out that it is a burden for every n00b to ask obvious questions, and that there are recommended ways to deal with this. Fridger did answer questions for me about Linux though, so I find him reasonable to get on with.
To say nice things: danielj's improvement in English has been very good, and he has expressed gratitude. Fridger does give answers, and is contributing to Celestia more than most.
Happy Families!
Spiff.
P.s., although Fridger may remind some of the standard German stereotype of being authoritative and formal, I can tell you that Germany* has nowhere near the degree of stiff formality people joke about. It's all dying away. Using the term Herr Doktor insistently can be seen as mocking.
* But not so much in Bavaria?€ , or Austria.
?€ They have a secession clause in the BRD constitution which they'll exercise if they think the rest of Germany isn't up to scratch.

Yes, quite right, he should have !Michael Kilderry wrote:If only Evil Dr Ganymede could have ignored Fridger a bit more,
possibly true Mind you, between you me and the doorpost (Steve=Blinded, try translating that one !! ) I think it was a bit rude of EDG to flounce off like that without so much as a good-bye to the rest of us !Michael Kilderry wrote:then he would still be here chatting with us.
Not me,. I was thinking more of the prototypical mad scientist who does not have a clue about social interaction !Spaceman Spiff wrote:P.s., although Fridger may remind some of the standard German stereotype of being authoritative and formal,
I have worked with Germans in Germany, Italians in Italy,Spaceman Spiff wrote:I can tell you that Germany* has nowhere near the degree of stiff formality people joke about.
the French in,,, Dutch in,,, and the Danes in Denmark,
I have lived and worked in Scotland with the Scots and in England with the English, I have lived and worked in Brazil, a charming people, and my big mistake was to leave there and to return to England (but that is another story !) So I know all about various stereotypes ! But unlike Herr Doktor, I do not use nearly every post to remind people of my superiority nor omnipotence !
can be well gosh, what else do you think I was trying to do ! ?Spaceman Spiff wrote:Using the term Herr Doktor insistently can be seen as mocking.
I can see that trying to be subtle in this forum is a bit of a waste of time !!!! )
But that is enough, you all know by now what I think of 'Him' , the rest is just chewing the cud, so I'll shut up, for fear of boring you all to death.
But I reserve the right to revisit the subject if I see Him 'at it again' without reprimand from the moderators.
Sorry to continue the off-topicness, but I must say I am quite disturbed how rapidly this thread has degenerated into Fridger-bashing. Recently this community has lost many highly talented members, for example Grant Hutchison and Evil Dr Ganymede. I am therefore appalled to see how readily some members are at driving yet another one of the community specialists away, to mention nothing of the Chris-bashing that occurred earlier in this thread. Sure, Fridger's conduct has not been angelic (but then again, who has been - we're all human here), but then again the conduct of these individuals (you know who you are) is pretty despicable. Having witnessed such episodes of attack on Fridger in the past, I am honestly surprised that he still continues to be a member of this community and contributes as much of his time to this project as he does.
Should this attitude of driving out talented members of the community who have contributed huge amounts of time and effort persist, then I am not sure I for one wish to continue to be a part of it.
