8O

I've never before seen a failure that looks exactly like that. It resembles a cloud layer problem (often caused by using too-large cloud textures) but isn't identical.

What version of Celestia are you running?

Exactly what kind of graphics card do you have? In other words, what does it say in Celestia's menu Help / OpenGL Info ?

Have you updated to the very most recent graphics drivers from the vendor of your graphics card?

If it is a problem with cloud rendering, they can be turned off in Celestia's menu Render / View Options.

I would not suggest using any drivers except those provided on the vendor's web site. You don't know what might have been added to them...

Celestia v1.3.2 uses an OpenGL routine that Intel does not support. That routine may be the cause of your problem. It'll be fixed in the next prerelease of v1.4.0, which may be available in a week or two. In the meantime, you can edit celestia.cfg (it's a plain text file) and remove the # that's at the beginning of the line

Code: Select all

 IgnoreGLExtensions [" GL_ARB_vertex_program" ]

That'll disable Celestia's routines that draw specular reflections and bumpmaps. They're the ones with the problems.

If you type a Ctrl-V several times while Celestia is running, it'll step through the various Render Paths available in Celestia for your graphics device. Does that make any difference?

it's make no differences either. it's step two render options; basic and multitexture.

What do other planets and moons look like? Are there any that are rendered properly, or do they all look like that?

Have you tried commenting out lines in the Earth entry in "solarsys.ssc" to see if the problem goes away?

If you take a close look at each line, you will see that every second line is shaded differently, but all have a graduation in shading from the middle to the edge. What parts of the rendering in Celestia have shading that resembles that? I suspect it's specular reflections, atmosphere and haze. I would comment out the Atmosphere, Haze and Specular sections in solarsys.ssc to see if that makes any difference.

Try this: toggle the window size between 'maximised' and 'framed' (i.e., has a size smaller than full screen but not 'minimised'). I find that this causes Celestia to 'refresh' textures and sometimes problems like this go away...
