I've finally got around to updating the .zip file. I've edited the textures for classes IV and V to take into account Grant Hutchison's colour calculations based on the spectra provided in the paper referenced for such worlds. Minor changes to other textures have also been made.

This update includes the planets discovered since the original file was created, so none of the additions in this thread are required.

Link is in the first post in this thread, but I'll put it here as well: EDIT: removed - add-on is now incorporated into main Celestia distribution

Where can I find your update .zip file?I didn??t found in your homepage or in index of creators.Is the link the same as before?
I would like to know either if the more recent version is 1.1

Sorry, should have said - the link's in the first post. The update has version number 1.1. The old version finally has been put on the motherlode in my creators directory (a_tribick). I've uploaded the new version - we'll see how long it takes for them to update it: hopefully less than five months this time... ;)

Another update, I'm afraid. Looks like I built the new database from the penultimate version of extrasolar.ssc, so I missed HD 149026 b.

Current version is now v1.2

Can i use your addons with Rigel Kentaurus A & B' addons without problems ?

This add-on shouldn't cause any conflicts with RHAS's add-ons - the only planets modified are those in extrasolar.ssc.

There might be conflicts with add-ons that modify known systems, such as the Mu Arak (sic) add-on by Victor Dvorak, but I have not tested this, and this would of course depend on the order in which Celestia processes the files.

If a conflict does arise, it should be a matter of removing the relevant entry in exoplanet_textures.ssc - note that most planets are referenced by HD number, so to remove the entries for the Mu Arae system (for example), look for HD 160691.

Fightspit,considering you have tons of money(probably the richest person of the forum),you should do more interesting addons and even pay licenses to do addons based in copywright models,since money is no problem to you!Of course,you can pay a lot of money for protected NASA images or something like that.
Another thing.What are you doing in Celestia.It??s very easy to you to buy Orbiter and other paid programs

Aren't I generous? Version 1.2.1 is slightly smaller, and the textures are now public domain.

Well, if you know SURCOUF , a french informatic shop in Paris , I can sell my old products if I buy an new same products.
For example, I sell a Nvidia 6800 Ultra and i buy a 7800 Gtx .
Finally, I pay ~ 100 ?‚¬ 8).

Moreover, you refer about the license of NASA's picture and I haven't found
on the website that I must have permition to diffuse or to use picture.
I thinks its free for using, aren't you ?

I guess I don't have enough faith in my own add-ons... these textures are apparently going to be used in the next release of Celestia (whenever that may occur). To avoid causing problems for people who just download new versions of extrasolar.ssc, they won't be added to the CVS until then, so in the meantime I'm going to keep maintaining this add-on.

Further update (v1.3) - hot Jupiters with low surface gravities (<10 m/s^2) may be able to form silicate clouds. I have created textures which are "intermediate" between class IV and class V for these worlds (class5a.jpg and class5a_night.jpg). Any planet in class IV with such a low surface gravity is assigned to the intermediate class. I have also assigned HD 209458 b and TrES-1 to this class, as infrared measurements show their albedos to be consistent with at least partial silicate cloud cover.

Another update to extrasolar.ssc, which means there's another update to this add-on.

I removed the surface gravity criteria from the file as we don't really have any information on planetary radii to calculate the gravity, so loads of planets are back to being class IV again.

Added the following planets:
  • HD 212301 b
  • HD 188753 b
  • HD 149143 b
  • HD 109749 b
  • HD 118203 b
  • HD 208487 c
  • HD 33564 b

This add-on has now become part of the Celestia distribution. The latest version of extrasolar.ssc now uses these textures. The required files (exo-class1.jpg - exo-class5.jpg and associated nightside textures) can be obtained from the CVS tree. I am intending to make no further updates to this add-on for the foreseeable future.

Well, this was loads of fun to work on, and I hope people found the add-on useful. Since the add-on is now part of Celestia, I no longer need to actively maintain this, which is far more success than I anticipated for my first add-on.

Many thanks to Grant Hutchison for making this add-on more scientifically accurate as regards the colours of class IV and V planets, and for incorporating it into the extrasolar.ssc generation process.
